Unlike the failed 1990s VR revolution, it looks like this time VR is here to stay, so here is a look at the current state of VR for gaming.
Despite all the press over the past few years after the Oculus Rift made virtual reality seem like an attainable goal, the technology is still in its infancy with its place in consumer electronics largely unknown. That makes the competition rather stiff and led to Oculus locking down games for its hardware so they couldn't be played on anyone else's headset. Now, they've seemingly decided that decision caused more harm than good.
I Know What You Did That Summer Almost Two Decades Ago?
Welp, it was only a matter of time. But there's a writer on board for this particular remake that might mitigate some of your kneejerk anti-remake rage.
And the winner is...
There were some good movies that came out this summer. Some bad ones. And a lot of in-between. But which were which? We asked you, our readers, to share your opinions. And now we have the results. 2014 summer movie season, you have been ranked. The TMS writers also share their views on the movies that came out, because we couldn't let you have all the fun.
When we first heard
there was going to be a horror film starring both Doctor Who's Karen Gillan
and Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff
, we knew it was a must-see. Lucky for us, we were invited to an early screening of Relativity Media's Oculus
to see the horror for ourselves. We're not ashamed to say, we're still shaking in our boots.
It seems like it was winter just yesterday, but already summer movie season is starting in the US with today's release of a little movie called Captain America: The Winter Soldier
. A ton of movies are coming out over the next few months, some that we're looking forward to here at The Mary Sue (Guardians of the Galaxy
), some that we're... not (Transformers: Age of Extinction
). But we got curious: Which ones are you
most looking forward to? So we asked
. What follows is a roundup of the 2014 summer movie season, ranked from the flick you're are least anticipating to the one you're most chomping at the bit for. We've included our thoughts as well, plus a general sample of the responses we got to each film. (Are you in there? Step up and claim your wit!)
Does the breakdown surprise you, or is it just about what you thought it would be? Do you differ from the majority? Sound off in the comments.
, of Doctor Who
fame, is about to take a huge step in her career by appearing in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
. Here what she has to say about the villainous Nebula.
Bloody Good Fun
We've been anxiously awaiting the release of moving images from the thriller Oculus which features Katee Sackhoff as Karen Gillan's mom. And now we will see you all later, we're going to find ourselves some covers to hide under.
Are you following The Mary Sue on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, & Google +?
Things We Saw Today
Well, dressed as ninjas. Can you imagine flagging down an actual ninja to bring your your check? Kotaku
has more information on the Toyko eatery.
Virtual reality is virtually reality at this point.
John Carmack, the co-founder of id Software who pioneered 3D graphics and the first-person shooter with Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, is moving on to a new level of first-person gaming. It's just been announced that Carmack will be the chief technical officer for Oculus, the company that makes the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.
Things We Saw Today
Someone did an awesome job photoshopping Community's Alison Brie
as Captain America. What they failed to realize was she would have looked equally cool with her sensitive stomach region protected. (via ScreenRant
Elsewhere on the internet
Ok, that's not a young Amelia Pond replacement, it's actress Annalise Basso
who was cast to play Doctor Who
star Karen Gillan's
younger self in her new film Oculus
. And yes, that's Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff
with her new red locks to play their mom. She tweeted this photo
from set the other day but check out another after the jump with her and what she's guessing is the reason she got the role...
And Fansplosions Abound
When fandoms collide, it's (usually) a beautiful thing. I think it's safe to say that applies to this news. Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff
has been cast in Karen Gillan's
first movie gig after her run on Doctor Who
. And get this, Sackhoff is playing Gillan's mom. As if that wasn't enough to get you to keep reading, how about the possibility of Gillan playing a role in Inspector Spacetime
As we promised a few days ago in our Doctor Who Season 7 premiere photo gallery
, we've got three very special interviews from our time spent with stars Matt Smith
and Karen Gillan
, as well as new Executive Producer Caroline Skinner
at the event. Since Gillan is a fellow redhead, I've decided to let her go first! See what she had to tell us about her own time travel preferences, how she feels about leaving the long-running sci-fi series, and who she thinks could make a great female Doctor.
