According to Deadline, Disney XD has ordered a new animated comedy based on the Emmy-winning 1987-1990 cartoon series DuckTales that “will follow Scrooge McDuck, his curious and mischief-making grandnephews—Huey, Dewey and Louie—and the optimistic yet temperamental Donald Duck as they embark on high-flying adventures worldwide.” Oh, and also “Duckworth, Gyro Gearloose, Launchpad McQuack, Flintheart Glomgold, Magica DeSpell & Poe, Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys (Burger Beagle, Bouncer Beagle), Mrs. Beakley and Webbigail Vanderquack” will make appearances as well. But no Darkwing Duck? Then what is the point, Disney?
The new series isn’t slated to hit TV screens until 2017, so not not much else is known about what to expect yet, but we’ve obtained exclusive information from an insider source at Disney who tells us that they might solve a mystery, or possibly even rewrite history.
Meanwhile on the other side of your childhood, Netflix has ordered five new kids’ shows as part of their original programming, including a reboot of the 1983 series Inspector Gadget. Man, I thought all these shows were ’90s originals, and it turns out I was watching reruns from the ’80s this whole time? What was unique to my childhood, exactly? Sailor Moon and Bill Clinton jokes?
Anyway, the new series was created by Canadian company DHX Media and has already been broadcast on television in Europe, but Netflix will now have exclusive rights to airing it in the United States. It arrives on the scene here in March and later in foreign Netflix territories, and also it looks like this:
Okay, Disney, let me stress this before you get started on your own reboot: do not do this 3D nonsense to my ducks. Computer animation is a perfectly acceptable medium, of course, but 3d versions of the stuff that only existed in two dimensions when we were children tend to freak me the heck out. Like, have you guys ever seen the Garfield and Friends reboot? Not the terrible Bill Murray movies, I mean the rebooted cartoon they started making in 2008—it doesn’t just live in Uncanny Valley, it’s set up a bed and breakfast there where it entertains guests year round. And don’t even get me started on all the mixed Peanuts feelings I have.
