‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer Reveals RDJ’s Doctor Doom (and So Much More)

Doomsday is almost here. On Monday, Marvel Studios officially released the first teaser trailer and poster for Avengers: Doomsday, ahead of the film’s debut in theaters on Friday, December 18th. This coincided with a small number of early tickets for the film going on sale… but only for select “Infinity Vision” theaters.

The circumstances surrounding this drop are… interesting, to say the least. The teases pointing towards it were very small, with the official “Doomsday clock” that has been counting down through a livestream on YouTube since December teasing that something was coming in the hour before. Before that, the official Fantastic Four Twitter account — which has been posting the same clip (that isn’t even in the final cut of The Fantastic Four: First Steps) every Sunday at the same time for over a year — posted a version that ends with static and ominous new audio of Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm.

If not for an article in The Hollywood Reporter that had broken the Doomsday presale news last week, people might not have known what all of this was leading towards… which would be doubly frustrating, given the fact that some tickets went on sale twenty minutes before the trailer even dropped. Still, the release of the teaser trailer on Monday was an interesting choice… especially because it’s just a handful of days before Marvel Studios’ massive Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Many had expected the trailer (which was last screened for CinemaCon attendees in April) to be shown at the panel and then officially released online… so now, anything is possible.

What Is Infinity Vision?!!

There’s also the newness of “Infinity Vision”. For the uninitiated, it is an entirely new label that Disney is creating in the lead-up to Doomsday, as a result of the film not being able to open on IMAX screens, with Dune: Part III (which is releasing on the same exact day) already securing a three-week exclusive IMAX window. According to the official website, an Infinity Vision theater must have a screen that is a minimum of 45 feet wide, must offer 7.1 sound or Immersive sound like Dolby Atmos, and the projector must be able to reach brightness levels of either 14 footlamberts in 2D and/or 6 footlamberts in 3D.

An exact number of Infinity Vision screens is unknown: Disney claimed that there are already 75 Infinity Vision-certified screens in the United States with 300 internationally, but as of late June, the company revealed that they’ve received over 7,500 applications for new certifications. (Just based on my experience with the initial presales on Monday, the total number might be on the smaller side, as there were only two Dolby screens and one D-BOX theater in the Chicago area.)

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday follows beloved heroes from three distinct universes as they’re set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.

As mentioned above, Avengers: Doomsday will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, December 18th.
