Sam Neill’s Official Cause of Death Revealed as Fans Mourn the ‘Jurassic Park’ Star

Fresh details released days after Sam Neill’s death are shifting attention from the initial announcement to what those closest to the actor have chosen to share about his final months. The latest information fills in several gaps left after the family’s first statement while also providing a clearer account of how Neill spent the period before his passing.
The update arrives as tributes continue from colleagues across the film industry and as public interest remains focused on the actor’s long health journey. Rather than revisiting his career alone, the new statements reveal the circumstances surrounding Neill’s final illness and the family’s plans to honor him privately.
According to PEOPLE, Sam Neill died of pneumonia at the age of 78, his representative confirmed in a statement. The representative also revealed that Neill had remained professionally active until shortly before he became ill, despite having spent the past several years managing a serious cancer diagnosis.
Sam Neill kept working almost until the end
The representative said Neill continued working at a pace that reflected his commitment to acting even after undergoing advanced medical treatment. Over the past year, he completed four projects while also remaining involved with Two Paddocks, the New Zealand winery he founded and frequently described as one of the most rewarding parts of his life away from film sets.
“Prior to becoming sick, Sam had valiantly fought and beaten lymphoma through a new treatment called CAR-T therapy,” Neill’s representative said in a statement. The update indicates that Neill had responded successfully to CAR-T therapy before later developing pneumonia, which his representative confirmed was the cause of his death.
The representative also confirmed that Neill’s family intends to hold a private memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a later date rather than organizing an immediate public service. He also asked that the family’s wishes be respected during the period of mourning.
“I’d like to thank those who were truly close to Sam for considering his privacy with the respect he earned and his loved ones need and deserve during this immeasurably difficult time,” his representative said. Fans who wish to honor Neill have instead been encouraged to support organizations that were important to him.
Neill’s family first announced his death through a statement shared on Instagram on Monday, July 13. While the announcement confirmed that he had died in Sydney, Australia, it did not initially disclose the medical cause of death. The latest statement from his representative answers that question while reinforcing the family’s earlier description of the circumstances surrounding his passing.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia,” the family’s statement began. The family said Neill spent his final moments surrounded by relatives and emphasized that his death came despite encouraging progress in his cancer treatment.
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,” the statement continued. “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care. More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma after beginning treatment in 2022. The rare blood cancer forced him to undergo chemotherapy and later CAR-T therapy, an advanced treatment that uses a patient’s own immune cells to target cancer.
Sam Neill became globally recognized for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, but his career extended across more than four decades of film and television. He also earned acclaim for performances in The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, Dead Calm, The Tudors and Peaky Blinders, taking on roles across different genres and international productions.
The representative’s statement that Neill completed four productions during the past year reflects how active he remained professionally despite years of treatment. Those projects now stand among the final additions to a career that continued almost until the end of his life. Neill is survived by his four children. His family has said further details about the planned private memorial at his New Zealand farm will be announced at a later date.
