Well this is certainly unexpected.
Deadline reports not Warner Bros., not Marvel Entertainment, but Sony is moving forward with a female-led superhero film set in the Spider-Man universe.
They write, “Having pushed the next installment of its Spider-Man franchise out of 2016 and into 2018, Sony Pictures is doing a top-to-bottom revamp of its most important property, insiders say. And that includes a female superhero movie which is being eyed for a 2017 release date.”
So who are we actually looking at here? There aren’t a whole lot of choices for superheroines in the Spidey-verse, but possibilities are Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Spider-Girl (Anya Corazon), or perhaps Black Cat. Maybe Silver Sable, but I’m reaching.
“What other movies we could do was something everyone started talking about when shooting the last movie,” Deadline quoted one person with knowledge of the plans as saying. “With Salt, Wanted, and Lucy, there is a huge appetite for this right now.”
Sony was already working on expanding their Spider-Man property with a Sinister Six villain project as well as a Venom solo outing.
Just the other day Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned we’d see a female-led film from Marvel Entertainment “sooner rather than later,” but many have criticized their output so far and the time it’s taking them to get there.
Meanwhile, Warner is just getting ready to premiere a live-action Wonder Woman on the big screen for the first time, but in a film focused on Batman and Superman.
Sony has a few years to put something together. Everyone cross your fingers.
