Why Are People Talking About Jill Biden’s Ex-Husband?
Jill Biden is in the news for a very random reason this week. Her ex-husband has been charged with murder and she keeps coming up somehow.
William Stevenson stands accused of killing Linda Stevenson late last year. Prosecutors say that the 77-year-old man was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife. On December 28, authorities responded to a call and discovered the 64-year-old woman unconscious on the living room floor. Stevenson is reported to be the one who called 911 according to NBC News. It’s a strange story, but a lot of corners had one question, why did Dr. Biden come up?
Well, Stevenson was married to Biden back in 1973. Their marriage only lasted two years, as they would divorce. Two years later, she married Joe Biden and has been with him ever since. But, since the Internet craves a link to a popular subject to generate traffic, here we are! So, Mrs. Stevenson’s death plays backseat to both the actual alleged killer and a woman she barely knows/was aware of?
Still, the reporting on the ground indicates that Stevenson ran a bookkeeping business. New Castle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit was tasked with responding to the scene. Details like a cause of death or other motive have not been released to the public at this time. Detectives have already taken the man into custody from his home. Stevenson waits there, as his bail is currently set to $500,000. Reports are unclear if the suspect has an attorney at this stage.

On social media, a bunch of folks wondered why Williamson was being billed as Jill Biden’s ex-husband when they were only married for a short time. Her status as a public figure and the way media has treated other stars in similar moments came up. Culture writer Danielle Belton said it best on Threads, “ If someone put my name in a headline about my ex husband of *checks notes* TWENTY-FOUR YEARS AGO (I was briefly married at 24. I am currently 48), I would be livid. I DON’T KNOW THAT MAN!”
Elisa Doucette wrote, “The only thing those headlines are telling me is that Jill Biden rightfully ended a relationship with a real piece-of-s*** ex-husband over 50 years ago.” Still, folks are addicted to true crime on TV and in film. If you splash in a public figure that gets half of the Internet foaming at the mouth, you’ve got a recipe for instant reaction going. The case is still continuing and Williamson didn’t manage to secure that wild bail number. So, there won’t be any more developments until he faces a judge again.
The police department’s website reads: “Following an extensive weeks-long investigation into the death of 64-year-old Linda Stevenson, Detectives from the Division’s Criminal Investigations Unit, in coordination with the Delaware Department of Justice, presented the case to a grand jury. As a result, an indictment was returned by the New Castle County Superior Court charging 77-year-old William Stevenson with Murder in the First Degree.”
