A woman says a DoorDash driver demanded a higher tip, then reached for the food on the porch after a refund: ‘No, I’m keeping this’

She says the order was refunded after drop off, and the driver then tried to take the bag back as the customer pulled it inside.

A DoorDash driver allegedly demanded a larger tip, then tried to take the delivered food once the order was refunded. According to a TikTok video, the confrontation happened at a front door and was recorded from indoors, looking out at the porch. The caption states “Dasher called and demanded a higher tip because of traffic.”

In the clip, the customer tells the driver she has to take the food back. The driver answers, “That’s fine, they’re refunding it.” The customer replies “Okay” and reaches down for the bag of food sitting on the porch. “No, I’m keeping this,” the driver says as she steps forward. She reaches for it, and the customer pulls it inside. The driver keeps reaching, and the clip stops there.

A second video, labeled pt.2, shows the driver outside, shouting through a glass door standing open. Someone inside is holding the bag. “Oh, I have to take that? You’re not new! I’m not new!” the driver yells. The person inside steps back and moves out of view of the door.

The driver stays at the door

The driver stays on the porch and argues the food should go to her since the money is being refunded. She is still at the door when it ends. Drivers have also come to the door asking for food back, as seen with a DoorDash driver wanting food back. The caption adds that the customer called DoorDash to report the driver. All details come from the videos and the caption and could not be verified independently.

DoorDash states on its help page for drivers that Dashers receive 100% of all customer tips that DoorDash receives, including those earned on DoorDash Drive orders. Checkout tips are listed in a Dasher’s earnings right away, the page notes. It adds that customers can also tip after the delivery if they chose not to at checkout.

It also notes that Dashers get a push notification when a customer adds a post-delivery tip to a previous order. Tips can cause friction even when a customer pays outside the app, as seen with a DoorDash driver ignoring a cash tip.

A Pew Research Center survey of 11,945 US adults found 92% of adults who eat at sit-down restaurants say they always or often leave a tip. Among people who use other services, 78% say they tip for a haircut and 76% for food delivery. Separately, 77% say the quality of service is a major factor in deciding whether and how much to tip. No other factor the survey asked about comes close.

The survey also found 72% say tipping is expected in more places than it was five years ago. A broad majority say they are asked to tip service workers more frequently than in the past.
