Woman says a lawyer contacted her 3 years after a 6 month romance, then she found out what her ex left her: ‘The moral of the story, I’m an idiot’

She says a lawyer asked her to come to a hearing, and the texts she later shared appear to show he raised marriage more than once.

A New York woman says a lawyer’s letter pointed her to the will of a man whom she dated for six months. According to Knewz, she shared the discovery in a TikTok video. She states the lawyer asked her to come to a hearing and that the letter showed he had named her without ever mentioning it.

In a later video, she posted screenshots of old texts in which he brought up marriage more than once. In one, he wrote, “I was thinking that you should marry me soon. I think I’m a nice guy and you’ll benefit from it.” Elsewhere, he wrote that he wanted her life marked by “freedom, not worry.” He also stated that he had no children and no ex-wife, then asked who would receive the life he had built. Her replies appear to show that she valued his generosity yet preferred to go slowly.

In a second TikTok post, she shared that he had died at 45. She listed what she believes she could have received if the two had married. Her list includes a life insurance payout above $1 million and an engagement ring from Harry Winston with a $250,000 value. It also names stocks, cash, boats, vintage watches and more than four properties.

She states the estate left her a check and valuables

She adds that his estate did leave her something. “The moral of the story, I’m an idiot. He left me a GENEROUS check and some valuable items,” she states. All details come from her account in the posts and could not be verified independently.

According to the New York State Unified Court System, probate is the process of proving that a will is valid. The will is filed in Surrogate’s Court, and the executor it names is appointed to distribute the estate. The court system states that beneficiaries who inherit under the will must be notified of the proceeding.

Distributees, the deceased person’s heirs, must be served with a notice called a citation, the same page states. They can sign a waiver and consent to the executor’s appointment, or they can go to court to disagree with it. The report does not state what kind of hearing her letter described. Under the state’s estates law, the right of election belongs to a surviving spouse, who may take the greater of $50,000 or one third of the net estate.

The election must be made within six months of the date letters testamentary or of administration are issued. It cannot come later than two years after the death. The statute also lets the surrogate’s court extend the time in periods of up to six months. The state’s rules for estates with no will list a spouse, children, parents and other relatives in order. The statute does not mention unmarried partners.

Other TikTok stories also center on exes who return. One TikToker heard from her first ex after 10 years. Another described how a high school ex resurfaced years later.
