Over the weekend, BBC sci-fi show/Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood marked an anniversary: the debut of season two opener “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” which introduced the fan-favorite time-travelling bad boy Captain John Hart, played by the incomparable James Marsters.

When I watch Soul and see how much care and attention it took in getting the hair correct or the messy glory of the New York City subway system—which, Hera help me, I miss—it still doesn't feel like it fully gets the Blackness of its protagonist. And I don't mean just the blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments, but the immersive Blackness that comes from having Black writers on the project.

Society longs to be seduced and romanced and Bridgerton is delivering that to the population along with the romcoms that Netflix have produced. But clearly, our thirst has not yet been quenched. Take note Hollywood. Take note.
