This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

What with MineCon and the Minecraft 1.0.0 release this weekend, Minecraft has been getting a surge of attention unlike it ever has before. Throughout its history, Minecraft has benefited from (and pretty much relied on) word-of-mouth buzz. I remember hearing about the free weekend on podcasts, and then the beta release from my friends, and then I finally picked up a copy myself. Now, it feels like Minecraft is a household name, but is it? If so, when did it happen? This wonderful infographic by Visual.ly documents the rise of Minecraft by tracking its free and premium user accounts, and content. Where does Minecraft go from here? Who knows. Some place equally as revolutionary as the places it’s been, I hope.
