Jon Stewart To Bring “Onion-Like” Animated Series To HBO

I knew he couldn't stay away for good.

You didn’t think we’d seen the last of Jon Stewart on our televisions, did you? After his captivating return to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and his phenomenal closing monologue, it was really only a matter of time before someone confirmed that Stewart would be returning to become a permanent fixture on TV.

The news that Stewart had signed a four-year deal with HBO isn’t new, but I’ll admit I had forgotten about what was potentially in the works given that Stewart had been largely silent in the TV sphere. Thankfully, we had HBO’s new chief Casey Bloys to confirm some good news to us–Stewart, although absent, had given his blessing for the announcement to be made:

“He is establishing an animation studio. He wants to get material out on a daily basis. The idea is that it’s an animated parody of a cable news network in an Onion-like portal. It will be his voice, in his actual voice, and his tone.” “Onion-like,” Bloys later clarified, means that there will also be a written component. And, down the line, a half-hour effort on the linear network.

No launch date is official as of this posting, but Bloys stated that they’re optimistic for a September or October premiere–coincidentally, just prior to the 2016 presidential election. The addition of Stewart during The Late Show‘s live programming was a welcome one, so launching his new show in time for the height of political coverage would be a really smart move. Either way, we’ll all be happy to have him back.
