HBO is bringing us something to fill the Jon Stewart-shaped hole in our hearts that was left when he departed The Daily Show after approximately 3,141,592,653 years. What is that thing? Well, it’ll be Jon Stewart-shaped, at least, so it should be a good fit.
But other than that, details are kind of scarce. In the short term, he’ll be working on releasing bite-size videos “[viewing] current events through his unique prism” on HBO Now, HBO Go, and “other platforms,” according to HBO PR. The plan is for multiple videos throughout the day, likely about breaking news, because “daily” wasn’t enough Jon Stewart for us. We needed … The Thrice Daily Show. Way to one-up your former gig, Jon.
Stewart commented, “I’m so excited to be working with Richard [Plepler], Michael [Lombardo, HBO Programming president,] and the entire HBO family,” says Stewart. “Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again.”
So what’s the mystery, then? Well, in addition to this web-style content—which HBO is probably very into right now seeing as it’s how most people watch John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight on YouTube—HBO gets a “first-look option” on any Stewart TV or film projects. That doesn’t necessarily mean there will be any of those for HBO to scoop up, but Stewart’s got a pretty solid avenue for whatever he wants to do if he does want to go that way.
We’ll be watching to see how this develops—and also to keep our trust bullshit detectors finely tuned.
