Take Heart, Hamilton Fans: Lin-Manuel Miranda Will Film With Original Cast Before Going

And I am telling you I'm not goin—er, uh, wrong musical. Sorry.

As Carly shared earlier this month, Lin-Manuel Miranda has confirmed that he’s leaving Hamilton on July 9th, but not before one curtain callin front of a camera, that is. In a tweet shared earlier this morning, Miranda said, “We’re filming the original cast before I go. WE GOT YOU.” So, for those of you who haven’t seen Hamilton–and for you us folks who haven’t even listened to the soundtrack (hi, that’s me)–you can probably expect to see a film version of the show sometime soon.

As well, if you’re still trying that Hamilton lottery, keep at it; Miranda said that he’d be coming back here and there to reprise his role. In the meantime, his understudy, Javier Muñoz, who previously took over Miranda’s part in In the Heights, will be taking on the titular role after Miranda leaves in July.

In a post about that rad 360-degree VR recording of “Wait For It,” Teresa very astutely pointed out that the show’s likely already been filmed for posterity. Broadway, off-Broadway, and Broadway-adjacent shows are often filmed as a matter of record for the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. However, those films aren’t accessible by the general public. You’d have to be a student or theater professional performing research in order to watch the sealed-away recordings. I believe Miranda’s tweet refers to another recording that should be available to the general public.

Say what you will about watching a show on television versus watching on screen (movie theater or not), it’ll be nice to see the Hamilton experience spread farther than Broadway. Don’t forget that the show will start touring real soon, as well (Miranda told USA Today that one of his dreams is ultimately to bring Hamilton to Puerto Rico).

All that being said, it’ll be nice to see Miranda taking on brand new projects. As we mentioned earlier, he’s joining Emily Blunt in a brand new Mary Poppins movie. He’s undoubtedly got plenty of projects up his sleeves, so seeing him branch out beyond Hamilton will be a good thing, I think.
