Lin-Manuel Miranda Might Be Leaving Hamilton, But He’s Not Going Anywhere

One last tiiiiiime...

Well, the day we eventually feared would come is here–Lin-Manuel Miranda is leaving Hamilton. Not right away, of course, but on July 9 Miranda’s, as well as several other cast members’, contracts with the show will be expiring. Miranda has announced that when his contract with Hamilton is up he’ll be moving on to pursue other projects. But honestly, since he could very well be the incarnation of the character he plays on stage (the man is non-stop!), just because we’re not going to see him as Hamilton doesn’t mean he won’t thoroughly have a hand in everything else he’s working on.

Recently, Miranda not only wrote original music for The Force Awakens, but also for the Disney animated film Moana which comes out later this year. Meanwhile, his first hit musical In The Heights just got optioned for a film by The Weinstein Co and he’s been cast to star alongside Emily Blunt in the Mary Poppins sequel Mary Poppins Returns.

But that’s not all (we told you the man is noooon-stop!): he’s also confirmed to be making an appearance on James Corden’s popular “Carpool Karaoke” segment (after a fan spotted the two of them driving around town a few weeks ago and snapped a pic).

There’s no confirmation yet on whether Miranda would still periodically return to Hamilton for the occasional performance or if he will be departing fully once his contract has ended; meanwhile, several of the cast are currently in negotiations to secure bigger deals which may impact their decision to stay with the show, according to sources.

Either way, while this news is bittersweet (and will make me view “One Last Time” in a whole new light after July 9), we can rest in the knowledge that Lin-Manuel Miranda really isn’t going anywhere.
