Phones With Flappy Bird Installed On Them Are Selling For Thousands of Dollars

What a time to be alive.

Want to experience the magic and/or monotonous frustration that is Flappy Bird? Well, too bad. The creator of the game recently took the app down from both the iTunes store and Google Play, so if you don’t already have it downloaded on your phone, you’re out of luck. Unless, of course, you would like to buy a new one off of eBay for a couple grand.

Following the ridiculous success of this simple game, developer Dong Nguyen has officially decided to take his $50,000 in advertising residuals and run, telling his Twitter followers that he “cannot take this anymore” and that he will still continue to make games, just not Flappy Bird. It’s understandable given that he was probably getting more hate mail than the mind can comfortably conceive, and I bet about half of that hate mail was also racist.

But removing a game from the iTunes store doesn’t magically uninstall it from people’s phones (though we’re sure Apple is working on that technology), so for people looking to buy or sell a used phone on the Internet, having Flappy Bird on it appears to give your product an extra edge. Phones with the app are being listed as high as $134,295 by weirdos who don’t know how the free market works, but on average they seem to be selling for about $400 to $900. Android phones with the app are going a little cheaper, but still higher than average, and some Android users are also selling copies of the Flappy Bird .APK for about $5 a pop.

If you don’t already have Flappy Bird on your phone and you aren’t an incredibly wealthy nonsense person who will buy a whole phone to get it, then don’t worry — a huge crop of Flappy Bird knock-off clones have already hit the Internet, including one called Flappy Doge. It is exactly what it sounds like, and you can play it in your browser. Be warned, though, the physics on it are not like the Flappy Bird physics. It’s much harder. You’re welcome.
