E3 week is upon us, and the last few days already saw a few of the announcement-heavy (or announcement-light, in some cases) press conference events that kick off the show, including EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, Square Enix, and Ubisoft. Tonight, Sony will get their shot, showing off all the latest and greatest games that we can expect for the PlayStation 4 in the near future and beyond in their “PlayStation Showcase.”
What’s on tap this year? For starters, don’t expect any new hardware reveals, as Sony Interactive Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden already shot that down. The PlayStation 4 may be entering the “final phase” of its lifecycle, but that phase isn’t likely to be a short one. Games for existing platforms will be the focus this year, and it may very well be mostly games that we already know about—even if most of what we know about them is that they exist. Speaking of which, expect Death Stranding to be there in a more substantial form than the trailer we’ve already seen.
Along with that, we’re likely to get a look at The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and the previously delayed Days Gone. There’s also room for 3rd party games to show up and maybe help do some explaining as to why Square Enix’s show was so disappointing, considering that several of the things they did show at their own event were already announced by Microsoft the day before. Maybe the Final Fantasy VII remake will make an appearance, although it’s hard not to get the feeling, at this point, that it’s been pushed back to Sony’s next console with all of its delays.
There’s always a chance for surprises, though!
