An unexpected lawsuit.

Maryland mechanic posted a video of him helping someone change an air filter. Now, he’s getting sued for over $100,000

Mac (@macsmobilemechanic), the owner of Mac’s Mobile Mechanic from Frederick, Maryland, told TikTok about a lawsuit filed against him. After helping someone change their air filter, Mac said that he is being sued for over a hundred thousand dollars.

“I am getting sued over a video I posted over helping someone change their air filter. Thought that sounded pretty crazy too, until I saw how much they were asking,” Mac told TikTok. The mechanic is popular on social media for talking about tools and posting his repairs.

“I’m 24 years old. I started Mac’s Mobile Mechanic six months ago with one goal in mind, and that was to help people. I don’t know how to put this. Basically, I don’t have any money,” Mac explained. He added that the business is a couple thousand dollars in debt on paper and that he can’t afford a lawyer. Mac also claimed that he doesn’t even have insurance.

Mac clarified that although he is also a social media content creator, he doesn’t make much money from social media. He also claimed that he isn’t monetized on Facebook or Instagram, stating, “They don’t even pay me a single dollar.”

Not enough funds to fight his case

It’s unclear whether the person who sued him is a customer or someone he helped for free, since he didn’t specify their relationship. However, he didn’t expect someone he helped with a repair to turn on him.

Mac showed his apartment and claimed he pays rent. He also panned his camera from his balcony to his truck, which he said he paid his grandfather $2,000 for. “That’s essentially all I have, and this toolbox here that’s in my living room,” Mac said, motioning to his red US general toolbox, which he uses for work. Mac hopes legal professionals will reach out about his case, and some did in the comments.

What did this mechanic get sued for?

A TikTok user, who claimed to be a lawyer, said he messaged Mac privately to offer help. But another commenter asked Mac what he got sued for, and he replied, “Emotional damage.” Mac didn’t elaborate further, but publicly available information classifies the lawsuit as “Tort – Negligence.”

According to Cornell Law School, a negligent tort is a lawsuit brought against an individual or entity for causing harm or injury to another person through negligent behavior. In Mac’s case, the plaintiff sued the business for negligence. The plaintiff’s damages are not available to the public. However, negligent infliction of emotional distress (or in layman’s terms, ‘emotional damage’) can also fall under negligent tort. In another alleged negligence case, a woman claimed her car was ruined after refueling at her local Costco pump in New Orleans.

Because Mac didn’t disclose the person’s identity, it’s unclear which of his videos became the source of the lawsuit. Without knowing which video, it’s impossible to tell whether it was harmless or as outrageous as what this Iowa hairstylist experienced with a customer who couldn’t stop filming at her salon.

The plaintiff’s name has also been redacted, and Mac’s court case is still ongoing. Mac has not yet posted another update on the situation.
