This Non-Profit Created Super Cool Cosplay Wheelchairs for Kids at San Diego Comic Con

Everyone who goes to a con should enjoy themselves and, if they choose, get the chance to express themselves via cosplay. However, the cosplay portion of cons can be a bit more challenging for some, particularly if a mobility aid factors in.

At the 2026 San Diego Comic Con, though, one non-profit made sure that kids who use wheelchairs could achieve their cosplay dreams. The group, called Magic Wheelchairs, created some incredibly cool cosplay wheelchairs for those who wanted them.

One young man, Derek Thatcher, who was the recipient of one such cosplay, explained in an interview with ABC 7 Eyewitness News, “I don’t think I really could have expected how incredible and detailed and good-looking this actually turned out. It is just so nice.”

What Is Magic Wheelchair?

Magic Wheelchair is a non-profit organization based in Oregon. The group’s goal is to foster self-expression, empowerment, and inclusion for young people through custom-created cosplay designs. The organization relies on a team of volunteers who help bring these creations to life.

As volunteer Jeff Watamura told ABC 7 Eyewitness News, “It’s garage builders, professionals. I’m a teacher and we do this at school.”

Best of all, the cosplay wheelchairs are entirely free for those who receive them. And not only the cosplay, either; the program provides no-cost transportation to cons, lodging, and even badges for families. When it’s all over, the kids can take their cool costumes back home with them, at no charge.

What Kind of Cosplay Wheelchairs Does the Organization Create?

Magic Wheelchair provides all sorts of epic cosplay wheelchairs. Search the photo gallery on the group’s website, and one will see everything from dragons and Stranger Things monsters to Star Wars creations and so much more. The application for one of the organization’s wheelchairs only asks what kind of costume the kid would like, so it seems like, if a kid can dream it up, they’ll do their best to create it.

One of the most amazing cosplay wheelchairs they built for the 2026 San Diego Comic Con was Battle Cat from He-Man. The cat was huge, green, fuzzy, and of course, carried its red armor on its head and back (the claws were pretty life-like, too). Another was a cosplay of One Piece with the entire ship designed around the wheelchair.

The 16-year-old owner of the One Piece cosplay, Isaiah Mejia, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News, “I have no words for how awesome this chair is.”
