Marvel Fans at SDCC Thought They Were Getting Photos With a Deadpool Cosplayer & Would Never Believe Who It Really Was
San Diego Comic-Con is the place for big reveals and unexpected appearances, and this year was no exception. When it came to Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel on Saturday, around 30 cast members from upcoming movies took to the stage, but hidden away in the audience was an unexpected guest pretending to be an over-enthusiastic cosplayer. That was none other than Ryan Reynolds, debuting a brand new Deadpool suit.
Reynolds had been spotted earlier mingling with fans and having photos taken in a full grey Deadpool costume. Only he didn’t tell any of those fans taking pictures that it was him under the mask, allowing them to think they were just snapping pictures of someone with a talent for costume-making. However, as the Marvel Studios panel got underway, the truth quickly became apparent.
The moment came as the enormous Avengers: Doomsday cast — including Robert Downey Jr., Paul Rudd, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Letitia Wright, Pedro Pascal and more — all took to the stage. During the presentation, which included a new trailer for the film, Downey Jr. pointed into the audience and asked, “Who is this guy with the sword and stuff?” The “guy” introduced himself as Ricky, “a mononym like Cher or Madonna.” After some back and forth with the cast, including a cheeky question of “Where is Thor, and why was he crying?” in reference to the Deadpool & Wolverine TVA scene, it became apparent that this wasn’t just some random cosplayer, but Ryan Reynolds himself.
What is even more notable than Reynolds’s appearance itself is the costume he was wearing. Rather than the usual red suit, he wore a stark, grey-toned suit that comic book fans would immediately recognise as being taken from Marvel’s X-Force comics. This has been enough to spark plenty of speculation about what it means for the future of Deadpool in the MCU, and how it could connect to Doomsday or Secret Wars.
Ryan Reynolds Brought Something New to a “Safe” SDCC Panel
Reynolds’s appearance may not have confirmed Deadpool’s involvement in Avengers: Doomsday, but with the next two Avengers movies set to destroy and rebuild the MCU as we know it, it is not too much of a stretch to expect Deadpool to join the cast of what is likely to be one of the biggest superhero movies of all time. Showing up to SDCC in a brand new costume that is clearly not just a cheap prop suggests this is something we’ll be seeing more of, and it’s hard not to hope for something more than a fleeting cameo from Reynolds’s newest Deadpool look.
Reynolds’s appearance topped off a Marvel Studios panel that had a few reveals to make about the future of the MCU, but nothing that really blew the roof off the place. Kevin Feige revealed Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider in a new film directed by Shawn Levy, Ryan Coogler announced Black Panther 3 with David Jonsson cast as the new Black Panther, and the Doomsday cast assembled to completely fill the stage. However, a lot of these things were either spread across social media hours in advance by scoopers looking for engagement, or things that were not really a surprise.
That being said, it is clear that no matter how many gripes are shared online about the MCU, when Doomsday hits cinemas this December it will very quickly become one of the biggest hits of the year. Alongside the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day this weekend and Avengers: Secret Wars next year, Marvel Studios’ 2026/2027 looks set to be one of their biggest ever.
