Geek For Hire: How to Use Your Nerd Cred to Land a Job

The economy is on everyone’s mind. Who is getting hired and fired? Who’s finding work? Who isn’t? The current unemployment rate in the United States is 7.8%, but that number doesn’t reflect one of the primary problems in our economy today: many people aren’t advancing or can’t find full-time work in their desired field. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported “the number of persons employed part time for economic reasons rose from 8.0 million in August to 8.6 million in September.” Individuals in the study reported working part time because, “their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job.” This is the situation many of my friends and former colleagues find themselves in today. So I’ve been thinking a lot about how they can get the upper hand when looking for a job. If you are in a similar situation, I think I have the answer: Are you leveraging your geek status as an asset to potential employers?

What Disney Princesses Would Look Like If They Were Actually Human

Pretty Pretty Princess

Jirka Väätäinen is a graphic design student at the Arts University College at Bournemouth in the UK, and he's come up with some really interesting interpretations of what Disney's animated heroines would look like in real life using photo manipulation, including Aladdin's Jasmine, pictured above. Are they still bursting with unattainable beauty? Of course -- but they are so incredibly human in these pictures. Even Ursula the Sea Witch.

There Is a Real Library For Magic In Manhattan [Video]

this exists

One thing is for certain: If Hermione Granger was real and living in New York City, she'd be at this library reading every single book in it (again). The Conjuring Arts Resource Center in midtown Manhattan holds 11,000 books about the history of magic "and its allied arts" (which includes psychic phenomena, hypnosis, and slight-of-hand techniques) and functions primarily as a research library. Don't you love it when things like Hogwarts and Ray's Occult Books join imaginary forces to form something real?

Fake SNL Products That Were Actually Created

AdFreak reported today that a Mexican brewery has begun manufacturing the "world's first gay beers," Purple Hand Beer and Salamandra. Well, I knew this was already factually incorrect. Not the "gay beer" part. The "first gay beer" part. Because everyone knows that the first "gay beer" was Schmitt's Gay Beer, from the independent brewery of ... the Saturday Night Live writers' room. But gay beer is not the only SNL "product" that became real. Let's take a look back, shall we?

Adorable: Sisters Play Real-Life Angry Birds

Photographer Jason Lee has raised the bar on real-life depictions of Angry Birds, even adorable ones, with this photo of his kids. He explains the making-of to My Modern Met:

The girls have been playing their own version with stuffed animals and stacking up various objects, so I thought, hmmm, this would be a fun picture. I really wish I had a big enough slingshot, but I had to improvise. The setup was pretty straight forward, but the most difficult part was getting the younger daughter up in the air. I had to settle for this tried and true method, which is kinda embarrassing to say the least.

10 Awesome Real-Life Video Game Parodies

There's something about gaming mechanics that inspires the stickler and the parodist in us all, which is why real-life video game parodies so tickle our fancy and the fancy of gamers. Maybe it's because -- for older games, anyway -- we know they can be silly, but want to believe in them and the worlds they represent? (see: Super Mario; Donkey Kong; classic RPGs.) Maybe it's because we need to reassure ourselves that, for all the time we play them, they're not actually real? (See: Grand Theft Auto; WoW; The Sims.)

After the jump ten of our favorite real-life parodies of video games:
