Sirius Black himself just weighed in on the HBO Harry Potter series, and his take on the original movies might surprise fans

The upcoming HBO series adaptation of the Harry Potter books is already generating significant buzz, and Gary Oldman, who famously portrayed Sirius Black, is among those looking forward to the project. According to PEOPLE, Oldman recently shared his thoughts on why this new format could be a better experience for fans of the source material.
Oldman spoke about the potential for the show during the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 11, 2026. He noted that the original films often had to sacrifice significant character details to fit within a two-and-a-half-hour runtime. He said the team behind the new series plans to adapt the stories more closely to the books, which he believes will be more satisfying for viewers.
Oldman mentioned that the films left out important background, such as the creation of the Marauder’s Map by James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, Remus Lupin, and Sirius Black himself. However, the actor remains proud of his work in the film franchise, which began with 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and concluded with 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Goldman has expressed gratitude for his own Harry Potter experience
He credited Chris Columbus for his foundational work in casting and world-building. Oldman acknowledged that the original cast was lucky to grow into their roles over many years, a phenomenon he doubts will be replicated. Despite his appreciation for the past, he clarified that he does not typically revisit his old work.
The new series is currently in production, having started in July 2025. It is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25. The cast features Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter.
Other cast members include John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. The Independent reports that Warwick Davis is also set to return to the wizarding world as Professor Filius Flitwick. Francesca Gardiner is serving as the writer and executive producer, with Mark Mylod directing and executive producing.
Oldman’s optimism for the new series arrives during a period of intense public debate
On the same day that he made his comments, The Matrix director Lilly Wachowski criticized J.K. Rowling in an interview with Variety, accusing the author of funding trans genocide. Wachowski, who publicly came out as transgender in 2016, urged fans to boycott Harry Potter products, including the upcoming HBO series, comparing the act of supporting these shows to supporting her own eradication. She further criticized Rowling by comparing her to Nazis and Elon Musk.
In response to these allegations, a representative for Rowling, Neil Blair, issued a statement denying the claims, per Entertainment Weekly. Blair argued that the accusations were defamatory and fabricated. He stated that through the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, the author supports women taking legal action in the UK to preserve existing rights under the Equality Act 2010.
Blair emphasized that Rowling does not support legal actions aimed at harming transgender people or limiting their rights. He maintained that while people are free to disagree with Rowling’s views, the allegations presented by Wachowski were not based on evidence.
The J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund was launched in 2025 to provide legal support to individuals and organizations working to retain sex-based rights for women and girls. The fund aims to assist those who feel their livelihoods or rights have been threatened by policies regarding biological sex.
Rowling has frequently pushed for maintaining female-only spaces
This stance has drawn criticism from many in the trans community. She has often taken to social media to share her opinions, leading to public disagreements with various figures, including several stars from the original Harry Potter films. Actors such as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson have previously shared statements supporting the trans community, distancing themselves from the author’s rhetoric.
Despite these tensions, the production of the new series continues to move forward. The show is expected to follow the events of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
