US Ambassador to Canada suggests the country could be blamed if Republicans lose midterms. Mark Carney reacts: ‘Interesting way of framing it’
His comments have created some controversy

United States Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra has allegedly hinted that Canada will likely be blamed if Republicans do not fare well in the upcoming midterm elections. Hoekstra made the comments during a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, according to CTV News.
Citing three sources familiar with the conversation, the publication reported that Hoekstra allegedly made the remarks during a private business lunch at his official residence in Ottawa. The sources also said Hoekstra emphasized the need to win in Maine and Michigan, which are crucial to Republicans maintaining power in the U.S. Senate. According to The Guardian, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters, in response to Hoekstra’s statements, “That’s an interesting way of framing it.”
According to the same source, Hoekstra has made similar controversial statements before. On a podcast, Hoekstra suggested Canada was interfering with U.S. elections, The Guardian noted. He said, “We see all of that. We are monitoring it. We are evaluating it. And if some of it becomes election interference, America will respond to it.” He also issued a strong warning to such Canadians, saying, “Keep your nose out of American politics.”
A spokesperson for the U.S. embassy alleged that context was important
According to CTV News, after word of Hoekstra’s alleged meeting broke, a U.S. embassy spokesperson told them in a statement that the “reported comments are grossly taken out of context from a broader discussion.” However, the source noted that the spokesperson did not share the conversation’s context with them.
Speaking about Hoekstra, the spokesperson said in the statement, “The ambassador has consistently said that the Canadian media is attempting to overstate the relevance of Canadian issues in American elections.” They added, “As we have previously stated, Americans will decide American elections based on issues that are important to them.”
Hoekstra has long faced criticism from Canadian people
After he made the comments about U.S. elections on the podcast, Canada’s Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly, who had pushed back against Trump’s intimidation tactics a few months earlier and whom Hoekstra appeared to target during the episode, told reporters in Ottawa that Canada “would never do that,” adding that the country would “never accept that also being done to us in Canada.”
Meanwhile, Carney, while interacting with reporters during an official visit to Turkey last Friday, also dismissed the accusations, noting, “There is no merit to these claims. He added, “I’m disappointed their envoy sees that as his role to make these suggestions.”
The United States and Canada have been engaged in a trade dispute for some time, which has intensified further over the past few months, particularly after President Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting significant criticism from Prime Minister Carney.
