Third Sharknado Airing Sets Ratings Record for Syfy, Reaches More Viewers Than Actual Premiere

"Shark" doesn't even look like a real word anymore.

When Sharknado first premiered to mediocre ratings and an unreasonably huge Twitter response, everyone claimed that it was the latest movie to suffer from Snakes on a Plane Syndrome — a whole lot of online hype with little to no payoff. Well, tell that to the 2.1 million people who watched it this past Saturday.

Compared to the 1.1 million who watched the premiere and the 1.9 million who watched the encore, 2.1 million is kind of a big deal — especially since that number includes almost 791,000 adults aged 18-49, a majorly coveted demographic in TV ratings. It’s now officially the most watched original movie encore in Syfy history, the networks says.

Naturally Syfy is eating this attention up, not unlike the way that an aerial-borne shark devours its landlocked prey. Saturday’s third airing was part of an enormous shark-centric movie marathon, including Sharktopus, Two-Headed Shark Attack and Swamp Shark.

The sharks haven’t stopped falling yet, however: Sharknado will also come to select movie theaters in August for late night viewings, and the final encore will air on August 22nd.

Speaking of which, when referencing Snakes on a Plane earlier, I almost wrote Sharks on a Plane, and that’s now a thing I need. We’re all complicit in the upcoming Sharkpocalypse, so why not go out with a bang? Get on that, Asylum.
