Pete Hegseth just handed the keys to the Pentagon’s future to Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey, triggering a massive conflict of interest
Project Meridian is here.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has handed the keys to the future of the Pentagon to tech billionaires Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey. This move has triggered serious concerns regarding a massive conflict of interest within the highest levels of national defense. According to The Guardian, the announcement took place at an event in Quantico, Virginia, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
Hegseth dubbed this new initiative Project Meridian. The project aims to study how war may be fought as technology advances at a rapid pace. It is quite a bold step to place such influential figures in these advisory roles. Both men are among the most significant campaign donors for the current administration. They also own companies that stand to benefit directly from federal defense contracting.
The project will be led by Pentagon official Emil Michael, who previously served as an Uber executive. Reports indicate that Michael made millions in profits off non-public Musk company AI stock while in federal office. This occurred while he was guiding the artificial intelligence efforts for the Department of Defense.
Apart from Musk and Luckey, the project will also include Newt Gingrich
Beyond Musk and Luckey, the project will also include the Trump loyalist and former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. The team will be joined by others from fields such as academia and policy. Their primary mandate is to study the battlefields of the future. They are tasked with identifying the weapons and technologies warfighters may use in upcoming conflicts.
According to Tech Crunch, Hegseth outlined these goals in a letter announcing the project. The team has 120 days to submit its findings. They must propose actionable solutions to start developing, testing, and fielding advanced technology. The goal is to keep America a dominant military power.
Elon Musk was one of the chief financiers of the 2024 victory for the president. He spent over a quarter of a billion dollars in the run-up to the election. Campaign records show he remains a major force in the coming midterms. His America Pac spent $3.4m attacking the Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Senate race. In the hotly contested Texas Senate race, America Pac spent $6.4m to oppose Democrat James Talarico and $1m to support the Trump-endorsed Ken Paxton.
Musk also maintains close ties with the administration. He recently had lunch with the president alongside other top AI leaders to discuss the future of the technology. This project seemingly marks his first official return to the administration’s fold since he left the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last year.
Musk’s company SpaceX has been a crucial contractor for US space programs since 2018
In the second Trump administration, his company has emerged as a key player in the pet Golden Dome ballistic missile defense project. This is a phenomenally expensive effort that could cost as much as $1.2tn. SpaceX currently launches satellites for the government and operates a network that supports national defense and security missions.
Palmer Luckey has achieved immense celebrity in the world of defense contracting. He is the founder of Anduril, a company that has already won significant federal contracts. Luckey is also known as one of the most important bundlers for Republican candidates on the west coast. One source even called him the godfather of Republican fundraising on the west coast.
Invitations to political fundraisers show Luckey hosted and co-hosted events for candidates ranging from the president himself to Ken Calvert, Rick Scott, Mehmet Oz, and Ted Cruz. On August 22, he and his wife co-hosted a $50,000-a-head effort to Keep the Senate. The guest list included John Thune of South Dakota, Mike Rogers of Michigan, Dan Sullivan of Alaska, and Jon Husted of Ohio.
Luckey’s company is backed by Joshua Kushner’s equity fund
It has acquired manufacturers of underwater drones, UAVs, and space technology. Luckey has been quite vocal about his philosophy on warfare. He recently stated that he thought warfare in the second half of this century would involve subterranean conflict. He believes vehicles will move through the crust of the earth the same way that submarines move through the water.
Luckey has even claimed that his company has working prototypes of subterranean systems. Anduril creates autonomous military systems and drones. It was recently awarded government contracts to produce long-range missiles and semi-autonomous fighter aircraft. It also supplies hardware and integration for the Army’s mobile intelligence system.
Brendan Glavin of Open Secrets, a non-partisan group that tracks campaign spending, provided some perspective on this development. He said, “Bringing major industry players into these types of positions at the Pentagon is not something new, but what feels different now is the substantial financial support these two have, and continue to, deliver for the Republican party.”
Critics argue that putting Musk and Luckey on Project Meridian directly aligns with their business interests. They will be in a position to find solutions that their own companies already sell.
Hegseth also announced an Autonomous Warfare Command
This effort is meant to speed up the development and deployment of autonomous systems and drones. One curious detail in the announcement is that the study will come through a partner organization. However, the announcement does not say what that organization is or who leads it. When asked for comment, the Pentagon referred requests to a press release.
Representatives stated they had nothing further to provide beyond the comments made by the secretary. The administration has clearly made advanced military technology a priority in both development and purchasing. They are looking to Silicon Valley-approved companies to help make this happen.
