New York City couple unexpectedly found ‘police’ inside their Costa Rica Airbnb. Then, they read a chilling review: ‘Hope you’re in for another night’
Trouble in paradise.

Les (@creatingthecode) from New York City went on vacation to Santa Teresa, a popular beach town in Costa Rica. He and his girlfriend looked forward to spending the holiday at an Airbnb until they had unexpected visitors one night.
“7 p.m. and I’m driving through the jungle of Costa Rica, listening to some Frank Ocean to stay awake, but gosh d*** it, I was teleporting on that road,” Les recalled on TikTok. On the way to their Airbnb, he said his girlfriend spotted a one-star review of the property. His girlfriend showed the Airbnb they were about to stay at, and Les said it had only one bad review. She asked whether he knew about the review before he booked, but Les said it wasn’t there when he booked.
The property, Casa Boho, had many five-star and four-star reviews. Les shrugged it off and reassured his girlfriend, but in hindsight, he said he should have read the review more closely. They were only thirty minutes away when it started to rain hard. When he asked his girlfriend for directions, the host allegedly advised them not to arrive at night, or the Airbnb would be difficult to find. Les’ girlfriend asked him if he was sure about the Airbnb and suggested that they stay the night at a hotel closer to town. However, Les insisted on the Airbnb because he paid $1,200 for their stay.
An Airbnb in the middle of nowhere
They continued, and his girlfriend said they had to check in with the first guard, then a second guard, before being allowed inside the property. He rolled down his window to the first guard, whom he spoke to in Spanish. Les told him that he and his girlfriend were going to Casa Boho, and the first guard told them to go further down the road to check in with the next guard. Before Les drove away, he said the first guard looked at his girlfriend a little longer than usual. Even though they both found the gesture creepy, they kept going to the Airbnb. When they checked in with the second guard, they were pointed in the property’s direction. They drove through some potholes and finally reached Casa Boho.
“We opened up the door, and they left it unlocked,” Les commented. This didn’t alarm him, and the host left the keys on the counter. When his girlfriend closed the door, they allegedly found out that the lock was only a push-button latch. Les described it as a bathroom-door lock. Les assumed there wasn’t much crime in the area, but he started to feel like he and his girlfriend should’ve booked a stay closer to town. Regardless, they stayed the night, swam in the morning, and went to town during the day to get food and visit the beach.
Strangers inside the property
But when they returned the next day, Les alleged that they had an odd encounter with an unknown man. When they checked in with the second guard, he was allegedly with an unidentified man. They were told to proceed by the guard, but then the strange man beside the guard allegedly made a kissing gesture to Les’ girlfriend.
“This time around, it wasn’t the same Airbnb,” Les claimed. He went to the bathroom inside the Airbnb. After gaming on his phone for a while, he heard his girlfriend talk to two strange men by the pool on the property. Les freshened up and got out of the bathroom to check. He said there were two Costa Rican men, one in a purple shirt and the other in a black shirt. They were allegedly speaking to his girlfriend in Spanish until he intervened. Les said they tried speaking broken English to him and explained that they were “investigating” the property. The men allegedly claimed that a robbery had happened not long ago. Despite being in plain clothes, the men allegedly identified themselves as police and whipped out their badges.
Les believes the badges were fake. Regardless, the men allegedly said they would be taking photos of the house. Les said they took pictures of all the entrances and windows. He messaged the property’s host about the situation. However, they allegedly told Les that they weren’t informed about the police coming over.
“Who’s at your home?” the property host allegedly asked. Immediately, Les started looking for new hotels and Airbnbs, but nothing was available. They still left the property with their truck and went to Katana, a sushi place, to figure out their next steps. While walking back to their truck after dinner, his girlfriend allegedly spotted a yellow ring around his tire.
A review he shouldn’t have skipped
His girlfriend voiced her concern, saying that she’s heard stories of people’s wheels being tagged by human traffickers. While some traffickers stick to following their target, some tag their supposed victims to identify them as targets. Then, his girlfriend asked if the men at the Airbnb took any photos of them. Les was uncertain, but he made up his mind and decided to grab their things from the property and move to a different hotel.
When they returned to the property, Les said the guards were nowhere to be found. He instructed his girlfriend to lock the car door as he gathered their belongings. As they left Casa Boho, his girlfriend found another negative review of the property.
The one-star review warned other travelers not to stay at the property because they were allegedly robbed of $3,200 while they were gone. While checking the review, the property host allegedly messaged them, saying, “Hey, hope you’re in for another night. I’m sorry about the confusion. It’s all planned out.” But Les isn’t the only one whose Airbnb has been crashed by strangers. A woman from Texas suddenly had pest control burst into her Airbnb during her stay, leaving her with nowhere else to go.
