JD Vance lists Trump administration wins for NYC. Then Zohran Mamdani responds with a video many are calling a ‘generational takedown’

Mic drop.

The political landscape turned quite chaotic on November 3, 2026, when NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani decided to deliver a response to Vice President J.D. Vance that many people are now calling a generational takedown. The whole situation started when Vance shared a list of what he claims are the Trump administration’s major wins for New York City and the surrounding state.

The Vice President wanted to highlight his team’s impact right before the midterm elections. However, the Mayor opted for a visual reply that went viral almost immediately. Instead of typing out a long rebuttal or a formal policy critique, Mamdani shared a nine-second video. According to Reality Tea, the clip shows a person in a reflective vest standing at a subway station.

As the train arrives, the individual pretends to slow it down with his hand. He then acts like he is holding the automatic doors open for passengers as if he were responsible for the entire operation. The Mayor did not include a caption with the video, but the message was clear to everyone watching. He was seemingly mocking the idea that the Trump administration deserves credit for things that are already happening on their own.

Mamdani’s response quickly gained massive attention

It reportedly reached over 69 million views on X where it was shared. People were quick to react to the spectacle. One person wrote, “Fun fact: This tweet is going to enter the permanent municipal archives of the City of New York since it was made from the official government account and not his personal account. It will also probably have over 1 million ‘likes’ by the morning.”

Another user commented, “Generational tweet.” Someone else joked, “Hello NYPD I’d like to report a murder.” A third person declared, “This has to be the most brutal ratio in the history of this site.” The sentiment among these users was that Mamdani had essentially cooked his political opponent in front of a massive audience.

According to The Mirror, the original video used by the Mayor was actually created by an online prankster named Olly Bee back in December 2025. That original post was titled, “World’s hardest worker.” By repurposing it, Mamdani managed to turn a simple joke into a sharp political commentary. The praises kept flowing in, with one person writing, “That’s my mayor (i live in New Zealand).”

Vance’s original post claimed that the administration made communities safer, cut taxes for working families, and brought in record corporate spending. He specifically pointed to companies like Anthropic and IBM.

The White House’s page for New York even claimed that IBM plans to invest $150 billion across the country, with New York at the center of that effort. It also stated that Anthropic is putting $50 billion into data centers across New York and Texas. The site admitted that some of these totals cover more than just New York.

The backlash against Vance’s claims was swift

Vance’s post actually received a user-generated Community Note to provide more context to his list. The note pointed out that several of the figures listed are not federal results or specific to New York. For instance, the $472 billion figure combines pledges from across the entire country.

The note specifically mentions that Micron’s $250 billion pledge is nationwide, with only $100 billion allocated to a New York site. It also clarified that the 48% drop in murders mentioned by Vance actually stems from the state-run GIVE program, which covers 28 departments between January and May 2026.

Mamdani’s choice to use humor rather than dry statistics seems to have resonated with people who were already skeptical of the administration’s claims. The Mayor has his own list of local accomplishments to point to, which gives his trolling a bit more weight.

Governor Kathy Hochul recently pledged $1.2 billion to expand the 3-K program and provide free child care for two-year-olds. Additionally, the Rent Guidelines Board approved a rent freeze for about one million stabilized apartments starting on October 1. The Mayor also launched an Office of Community Safety, which he uses to show that he is actively working on local issues.

Digital interactions tend to influence public perception during election cycles

Vance had declared on X, “We got your back, New York!” while listing statistics like a 45% drop in murders and 337,000 jobs protected. By responding with a video of a man pretending to control a subway train, Mamdani effectively shifted the focus away from those numbers.

The internet seems to have decided that the visual metaphor was more persuasive than the official list of achievements. The sheer volume of engagement suggests that the Mayor’s strategy was highly effective at grabbing attention.
