From unwanted mail to offensive fan demands, Spike Lee lists how his pro-Palestinian stance still draws backlash
The price of speaking up.

Spike Lee is facing a wave of hostility linked to his public stance on Palestine, ranging from aggressive confrontations at sporting events to unsettling encounters at his private residence. According to the New York Post, the acclaimed director, who is a fixture in New York sports culture, recently opened up about how these political views have made him a target for harassment.
The tension reached a boiling point at Yankee Stadium during Game 2 of the wild-card series against the Red Sox on September 30, 2026. Lee was sitting in the Legends Suite when a fan approached him under the guise of wanting a selfie. Instead of a friendly interaction, the fan demanded that Lee say “f–k Palestine.” Lee reacted with immediate anger, standing up to alert security.
The situation grew heated, with Lee shouting at the individual while being held back by staff members. A man wearing a blue sports coat eventually intervened and ordered the fan to leave the area, telling him, “You’ve gotta go. You’ve gotta go.”
The harassment extended beyond the stadium seats
Lee described a disturbing incident at his own home involving pro-Israel influencer Lizzy Savetsky, who he noted is someone “who does a lot of Instagram stuff.” According to Lee, on February 16, 2026, she stood in front of his house, held an Israeli flag, and proceeded to engage in a verbal tirade. He alleged that she then stuffed an Israeli flag into his mailbox.
Lee stated, “It really is against the law when you mess with someone’s mail.” Beyond these specific events, he confirmed that he is still getting a lot of hate mail and similar messages due to his political positions.
These recent events are not the only times Lee has found himself at the center of public discourse regarding his opinions and his association with sports teams. He has long been an outspoken figure in Hollywood and is arguably among the most recognizable New York sports fans. His influence on team culture is significant, as he was the original spark for the trend of non-traditional sports gear.
Lee once bought a New Era Yankees jacket that featured a red stripe and wanted a hat to match. When he called New Era, the company told him, “We don’t do that.” Undeterred, he got New York Yankees owner Steinbrenner on the phone to explain his vision. Steinbrenner then called New Era, and they created a red Yankee hat for him. Lee noted, “Before that, teams only had hats in their team colors. The red Yankee hat started everything!”
Lee’s dedication to New York teams remains steady
This is even when he finds himself in opposition to team leadership on political matters. This is evident in his recent comments regarding the New York Knicks and a potential visit to the White House under President Donald Trump. After the Knicks secured their first championship in 53 years earlier this year, team governor James Dolan claimed he had already accepted an invitation to the White House on behalf of the team.
According to Complex, during an appearance on WFAN radio, Dolan mentioned that they still had to figure out the details of the visit. This decision followed a moment where Dolan personally invited Trump to attend Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals.
Lee is firmly against the idea of his team visiting the White House. He expressed his frustration with the pressure allegedly placed on players by Dolan. During an episode of First Take, host Stephen A. Smith mentioned hearing talk about Dolan having an “attitude with players because they don’t wanna go to the White House.”
Lee pushed back against the idea that the team could be forced into such a visit. “He can’t force them!” Lee said in his interview with Variety. “It’s been years since the last NBA team has gone. They’re not going. I hope they don’t go! I hope they don’t go.”
The decision on the White House visit is still awaited
While the organization has stated that the team has not reached a final decision, the internal friction is apparent. New York Knicks captain Jalen Brunson noted later that the team had not yet discussed the matter together.
“That’s something that we actually haven’t discussed as a team,” Brunson said. “And so obviously, people are making assumptions and saying everything, but together we haven’t discussed it yet. And so we’ll cross our bridge when we get to it.” Head coach Mike Brown also clarified in September that the team remained undecided and was still “discussing internally.”
