Iconic final girl Neve Campbell confirms the Scream 8 news fans have been waiting for, and she’s keeping quiet: ‘I’ll be in it!’

One of the best final girls ever.

The long-running Scream franchise released its seventh film in February 2026, which focused on iconic final girl Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell) and her daughter Tatum. Scream 7 became the series’ highest earner, with a worldwide box office total of $208 million. A month after its release, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Scream 8 was a go.

However, it was unclear whether Campbell would appear again in the franchise. On Monday, November 2, she finally confirmed the news fans have been waiting for when she told The Associated Press, “I’ll be in it!” When asked to share more, though, she replied, “I can never tell you anything about Scream 8!”

The rise of Neve Campbell and ‘Scream‘

While Campbell was already known for her breakthrough role on Party of Five and movies such as The Craft, her turn as Sidney Prescott in 1996’s Scream set her on the path to stardom. The slasher film was unlike anything that had come before it —subversive, meta, bloody, and funny. It was an unexpected success and launched the Scream franchise.

Scream 2 premiered the next year, with Scream 3 following in 2000. Another Scream film wouldn’t appear until 11 years after the end of the original trilogy, with the release of Scream 4. Campbell starred in the first four films in the series.

The franchise then relaunched in 2022 with Scream (not a remake, but a sequel to the fourth film; it was also the first in the series not directed by Wes Craven, as he had passed away), with Campbell playing a smaller role. Scream 6 premiered in 2023 and was the first one not to include Campbell, as she sat out due to salary disputes.

What we know about ‘Scream 8‘

Little is known about the next film in the series, so far. Nothing about the plot, the rest of the cast, or even a potential release date has been revealed. Earlier this year, rumors suggested the film would begin filming this fall, but that was never confirmed.

What is known is that the Zuckerman sisters (Lilla and Nora) are penning the script. They’re best known for serving as the showrunners for the first season of Poker Face, and for their work as executive producers and writers on shows including Prodigal Son, Suits, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Fringe. The sister team also helped write the pilot for the now-canceled Buffy reboot.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream and directed the seventh film, will not be returning for Scream 8. He explained in an interview with Hello Sidney earlier this year, “I want to direct another film that I had written that is just waiting for me to find the time to direct. And right now, I’m working on a couple TV shows that I’m really excited about. So maybe I’ll direct one of those — who knows? For the next Scream, I’ll probably step back and just be a part of the family again.”
