Jalen Brunson follows up his SNL hosting gig by joining the cast of Law and Order: SVU for their 599th episode
Fans have been anticipating this crossover for months.

Jalen Brunson is taking his talents from the basketball court to the precinct as he prepares to make his scripted acting debut on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. According to Comics Basics, the New York Knicks star is set to appear in the show’s 599th episode, a massive milestone for the long-running NBC drama.
This appearance follows a busy year for the 30-year-old guard. Brunson helped the Knicks break a 53-year championship drought and even hosted the 52nd season premiere of Saturday Night Live (SNL) on September 26.
Fans have been anticipating this crossover for months. Brunson first mentioned his interest in joining the show back in July. Mariska Hargitay, who plays Captain Olivia Benson, is a well-known Knicks superfan and has been vocal about her desire to see him on set. She even included him on her personal bucket list of guest stars earlier this year, placing him in the same category as Jamie Lee Curtis.
The connection between the two has grown significantly over the past few months
Hargitay and Brunson appeared together in a pre-taped opening for the 78th Emmy Awards, where they joked about the title-clinching tip-in by OG Anunoby against the San Antonio Spurs. The casting became official after cameras captured the pair working together on set in Brooklyn on September 16. NBC confirmed the news the following day, though the specific details of his character remained a secret for weeks.
It is now known that Brunson plays a detective in the episode. A recently released trailer provides our first look at the character, who is named Detective Madison. In the footage, Benson greets him by saying, “Detective Madison,” to which he responds, “Hey, Captain,” while wearing a detective badge around his neck.
This specific SVU episode is titled Forsaken and serves as the fifth installment of the current season. It is scheduled to air Thursday, November 5, at 9/8c on NBC. The episode will also be available for viewing on Peacock. It is a critical move for the network, as it brings in sports fans who might not watch the program regularly. Having a hometown hero appear on a show set in New York adds a layer of authenticity that fits the tone of the series.
The plot of the episode centers on the assault of a wedding guest during a reception
According to the New York Post, official descriptions state that “Benson and the squad uncover a secret that changes the course of the investigation; [DA Sonny] Carisi’s pursuit of justice becomes increasingly complicated when key witnesses refuse to cooperate.” The season has focused on darker, more personal themes for Hargitay’s much-loved Captain Benson, who has reportedly felt disillusioned with the justice system.
Brunson’s involvement with the cast extends beyond the studio. Hargitay was a visible presence during the team’s championship victory parade on June 18. She also appeared as a guest on the Roommates Show, a weekly podcast hosted by Brunson and teammate Josh Hart, during a live event at Randall’s Island Park in September. She even teased the collaboration during an appearance on the Today Show back in August.
This role marks a shift for Brunson, who has spent his offseason on a massive media tour. He has made appearances in WWE programming, hosted Saturday Night Live, and attended the Emmys. Despite his busy schedule, he remains focused on the upcoming basketball season.
The 599th episode is a significant lead-in to the series’ 600th installment
That milestone episode is expected to feature the return of Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler. Hargitay is also slated to direct that specific episode. The show continues to lean into high-profile cameos, with Stephanie March also scheduled to return as Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot on December 3.
Brunson joins a long list of notable names who have passed through the squad room over the years. His performance will be a point of interest for many, especially after he displayed his comic timing during his time on Saturday Night Live. It is interesting to see if he can carry that same energy into a dramatic role.
