S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson became an audience favorite in The Avengers and the Marvel films leading up to it, and fans thought he was gone for good. There’s been hope for a while now that Coulson would return in a S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, and that hope’s paid off. ABC has officially picked up Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a series. Coulson lives!

The pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D. was directed by Joss Whedon, who also wrote the script along with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. It’s safe to assume that the pilot was tremendous, and with the success of The Avengers it’s no wonder ABC is trying to cash in with a spin-off.

The announcement came Friday afternoon as a teaser of sorts to the ABC network upfronts this Tuesday, where they announce the fallschedule and give advertisers a look at new shows. It’s not clear exactly where S.H.I.E.L.D. will fit into the schedule, but if they’re taking suggestions, my Tuesday nights are usually pretty open in terms of television.

As another tease, Marvel and ABC released the above image showing Clark Gregg as Coulson with his new team comprised of Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, , Ming-Na Wen, and Brett Dalton. Hopefully we’ll see a clip or trailer after Tuesday’s upfront presentation.

So what’s the verdict? Is ABC picking up this show great television news, or is it the greatest television news?
