Trump Says the US Is Having ‘Wonderful’ Discussions With Iran, Accuses Them of Lying About Wanting To Make a Deal
Either Trump or Iran is lying, but whatever's really happening the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
In a viral clip on social media, Donald Trump, speaking to a Fox News journalist, has insisted that the United States is having “wonderful” conversations with Iran. That runs counter to what Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said earlier this week, when he insisted that no conversations with the US are taking place and none are scheduled.
Trump’s comments in this context were featured during an August 5, 2026, news segment on Fox News where he discussed the latest developments in negotiations with Iran and also spoke on other issues.
Trump noted that something “disconcerting” happens every time he mentions the US’s talks with Iran to news outlets like Fox News. He said that people within the Iranian leadership repeatedly deny such claims and emphasize that they aren’t having any such conversations with the US, often going as far as to say that they haven’t even met to discuss.
Trump said the Strait of Hormuz deal with Iran hasn’t been finalized yet
Trump may have repeatedly reassured Americans about Iran, but also recently confirmed that no deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has finalized, according to a Fox News article. While speaking with a journalist in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said that negotiations between Iran and the US are “sort of open right now.”
Trump also claimed the US Navy is maintaining a blockade in and around the Strait of Hormuz, but also pointed out that some risk still exists because Iran could carry out attacks that disrupt the boats in the area.
He said, “They can always shoot something. They always have something or drop a mine. And if you have one mine sitting out there, you sort of mess things up because people don’t want to take their billion-dollar boats and accidentally get hit by a mine.”
Iran’s parliament speaker accused Trump of “theater diplomacy”
The Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is also one of the top negotiators in the US-Iran talks, accused Trump on Thursday of engaging in “theater diplomacy” through a social media post. He highlighted Trump’s inconsistent messages about wanting peace with Iran and threatening them with attacks.
In an X post, Ghalibaf stated, “Massive attack coming… wait, never mind, they want to negotiate.” That’s theater diplomacy on loop. Using bullying + broken promises + fake news as leverage is a failed strategy. Acknowledge the facts and fulfill your commitments. We don’t need more theater.”
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed, with commercial traffic through it heavily restricted by Iran.
