Her Mother Tried Forcing Her to Pay Bills in the House. She Suggested a Third Option: ‘You Would Send Your Mama to Jail?’

Ideally, every child should be able to grow up in a safe and financially secure home. But a woman (@heightdefective) recalled how her mother tried forcing her to pay bills around the house. What she did to avoid that almost sent her mother to jail.

In her TikTok, captioned, ‘When they go low, I indeed go lower,’ she explained how her mother couldn’t keep her under control. Having grown up in what she believed to be a toxic environment, she had to be firm with her parents. She alleged that she witnessed her older siblings work, but have their money taken from them by their parents.

Essentially, she didn’t want to have the same experience. But while she was in college, she didn’t live in a dorm. She was still living with her family, commuting to and from college.

“My mom was hell-bent on getting me to pay bills in the house, and I was going to do that,” she said. She further explained that she was already paying for college and her car note without help from her parents. Moreover, she also alleged that she was taking care of her other siblings. The point is, she already had a lot of responsibilities, and she didn’t want to add more to her plate. Nevertheless, she said that it became something she and her mother fought over frequently.

One day, her mother sent her sibling to open the mailbox with her key. Her sibling handed her an envelope with her name on it, and it had ‘urgent’ in red letters.

“I open it, and it’s a past-due bill. It got a bunch of money that was owed on it, and I start screaming,” she said. At first, she thought someone tried defrauding her. But while she was screaming, her mother simply went into her room, took the paper from her hands, and didn’t say a word.

Did she pay the bills?

“I realize, oh my god, it’s not a random person who did this [expletive]. It was my own [expletive] mother. She put a bill on my [expletive] name,” she accused. For the longest time, she had been firm about not wanting to contribute money to the house. The next day, her mother started a conversation about the bill.

“Now that you know about the bill, you have two choices. First choice is, you pay the bill, and that’s just what it’s going to be… Or two, you don’t pay it, and it [expletive] your credit,” her mother warned. But her daughter didn’t agree to pay any bill. It’s unclear if her mother had gotten her a credit card without her permission, but she claims that she didn’t consent to paying for any of the debts. She was furious at what her mother did and admitted to cussing her out.

“I start calling family members, trying to figure out what I could do,” she said. But she alleged that her family members sided with her mother, told her to pay the bill and make peace. She refused to do that, so she went to Google in search of a solution to her situation.

“I found out this is highly illegal,” she said. According to the National Consumer Law Center, those who put other people’s names on bills without consent can be sued for fraud.

The next day came, and she said her mother started gloating about how her daughter had no choice but to pay the bill. Then, she told her mother she still had a third option. Her mother was confused and asked her daughter what her plan of action was.

“I could just send your [expletive] to jail,” she replied. The response left her mother in disbelief, and she had to ask her daughter to clarify. “You would send your mama to jail?” At this point, her mother was fuming, and they started arguing about it again.

“You’re the one who got two options. Either pay the bill and close that [expletive], or I’m sending your [expletive] to jail!” she said to her mother. In the end, she claimed that her mother paid the bills and closed the accounts she opened under her daughter’s name. Nobody went to jail in this instance.

Although she could laugh in hindsight, not all children could forget the pain their parents caused through the years. Some take estrangement over having to put up with more pain.
