Rose McGowan has been one of the loudest and most controversial voices in the #MeToo movement. Whatever you may think of her individual tweets and her limelight in comparisons to women of color, there is no denying that McGowan has been an unapologetic voice for the revolution going on in Hollywood. Her anger and fury are important and refreshing, because there is no such thing as a perfect victim and the need for McGowan to be the perfect mouthpiece is not only unrealistic, it is limiting.
However, my hope is that this show will be larger than Rose McGowan, and that she will use it to highlight and showcase women from different walks of life. The symbolic protest at the Golden Globes this year was a beautiful sentiment, but considering the fact that none of the men who won awards brought up #MeToo, or as Queen Padmé Amidala reminded us, only men were nominated for Best Director this year, more action is required.
In addition to this television show, McGowan also has her book Brave coming out January 30th the same date as the premiere for the show, which will be the beginning of a five-part docuseries chronicling her life as she navigates a post-Harvey Weinstein world.
Now, I can only hope that someone will take this same attention and place it towards Tarana Burke, who deserves equal if not more attention for her own activism. This isn’t about pitting them against each other, it is about making sure that women across the spectrum of race, gender, sexuality, etc, are heard. Until we listen to the voices of all women, justice will never be reached.
Also, let’s not forget this show will be airing on E!, which is currently dealing with the issue of not paying their female hosts as much as their male hosts, as exposed by Catt Sadler and brought up during last night’s awards by Debra Messing.
