Considering what’s happened, here’s a list of landmark firsts that we shouldn’t overlook:

  • Sam Park became the first openly gay man elected to the Georgia legislature.
  • Catherine Cortez Masto became the first Latina senator of Nevada, and comprehensive reform immigration was a large part of her campaign.
  • Kamala Harris became the first black senator to serve from California, and one of the first two Indian-American women ever elected to Congress.
  • Pramila Jayapal is the first Indian-American woman to hold a seat in the House, and one of the first two Indian-American to be elected to Congress.
  • Tim Scott is the first black senator in the South since Reconstruction.
  • Ilhan Omar is the first Somali-American to win in Minnesota.
  • Kate Brown was elected as the first openly LGBT governor in Oregon.

  • Affinity has a piece about how white feminism hurt us badly this election.
  • Journalists have a tougher job than ever now, and The Washington Post shared a rousing call to action.

BoingBoing shared Harvey Milk’s “Hope” speech, which feels especially relevant and necessary today.

I know we haven’t covered a lot of geek news today, so here are a few stories:

  • Tom Holland’s contract says he’ll be Spider-Man for 6 movies. (via /FILM)
  • John Boyega has confirmed a Pacific Rim 2 title. (via THR)
