Supergirl Costume Designer Kiersten Ronning Talks Kara Danvers’ Closet

One of my favorite things about Supergirl, aside from it being a fun superhero show, is Kara Danvers' wardrobe. Sure, we were all excited when Supergirl's Colleen Atwood-designed suit was revealed, but another hero on the Supergirl team is costume designer Kiersten Ronning, who's responsible for putting together Kara Danvers' closet.

One of my favorite things about Supergirl, aside from it being a fun superhero show, is Kara Danvers’ wardrobe. Sure, we were all excited when Supergirl’s Colleen Atwood-designed suit was revealed, but another hero on the Supergirl team is costume designer Kiersten Ronning, who’s responsible for putting together Kara Danvers’ closet.

I’ve always loved Kara’s cute, colorful, quirky outfits. Apparently, Ronning is trying to make her look not trendy, which I think is HOGWASH, as I think her clothes are totally stylish.

Then again, I’ve never been the most stylish person ever… Hmm…

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ronning reveals:

It’s really hard to shop for Kara. We try to do a little Clark Kent-ish thing there. It’s not stuff that’s sold in stores. It’s not what’s in fashion right now so that’s what’s hard, trying to make it cute and still appeal to everyone, but at the same time, it’s a little bit quirky.

I feel like there’s a little something about her that’s off and not human but she’s trying to fit in. But we still want her to be cute and all that. So we try to keep her bright. I really almost never use black on her. There’s a lot of black in the DEO and we’re trying to keep that whole CatCo world very bright and happy and fun.

What do you think of Kara’s duds, and do you think they’re a nice call-back to Cousin Clark, or do you think they uniquely define her as a character?
