One of the more popular theories about Star Wars: The Force Awakens has to do with who might turn out to be siding with the dark side. Lots of folks seem to think that good ol’ Luke Skywalker may have some less than savory motivations in this film. But a far funnier theory has begun to independently form in the minds of Star Wars fans: what if Kylo Ren takes off his mask and it’s Jar Jar Binks under there?
The theory takes many forms, including: what if Jar Jar Binks were a Jedi … or a Sith collaborator … or a Sith lord … or Kylo Ren … or Supreme Leader Snoke? Lots of people have come up with variations this theory over the years, usually as a joke — such as in the Robot Chicken episode from whence I clipped the gif above. Jar Jar Binks was meant to be a comedic character, and he fell flat — that doesn’t make him evil. Or does it???
A recent Reddit post making the rounds might be the first to lay out all the suspicious evidence, from Jar Jar Binks’ Jedi-like somersault skills, to his mind-tricky ability to convince other people to let him tag along on their adventures in spite of how much he seems to annoy others. Also, how did he become a Senator? And so on. This theory eventually spiraled off into DarthJarJar.Com, a site for sharing all your evil Jar Jar conspiracies.
Personally, I don’t think The Force Awakens will make reference to any of this — but it’s one of the more entertaining fan theories that I’ve read lately, and it might make for some hilarious fan-fiction. Perhaps I’m just not being imaginative enough, though. Do you think there’s any chance that JJ Abrams (also known as Jar Jar Abrams) plans to troll us all by revealing this twist?
