Yes, there’s a US adaptation of the Death Note manga/anime coming to screens near you – but it might actually be good, thanks to the intelligent eye of newly-signed-on director Adam Wingard.
Wingard has previously directed incredible and original (and kick-ass lady-led) films like 2011’s You’re Next (which you absolutely must check out, even if – like me – you typically hate horror movies), and 2014’s much-lauded The Guest. Also on board for the Death Note adaptation are producers Roy Lee (Bates Motel), Dan Lin (The LEGO Movie), Jason Hoffs (Edge of Tomorrow) and Masi Oka (yatta!).
If you’re not familiar with Death Note, it’s a horror manga about a student who can kill anyone by writing their name in a notebook – and he decides to cleanse the world of some serious evil. Gus Van Sant was actually rumored to be in the running to direct last year.
Wingard has a great track record, and he has Tokyo-born Oka on-board – so let’s just pray to the Hollywood heavens that they don’t white-wash the crap out of this film, because it might actually have the potential to be radical.
