Up-and-comer Jane Levy, who currently stars on the ABC show Suburgatory, has taken the lead female role in the Evil Dead remake, replacing Lily Collins, who vacated the role due to scheduling issues. By looking at her (because I have not yet seen Suburgatory, and I feel like I might be missing out), it looks like she will be channeling either her inner Emma Stone or her inner Kristen Stewart. It’s really hard to make predictions, because as exciting as it is to see a female lead in the Evil Dead, we’re talking about Evil Dead without Ash in it. Hmmmm.

So, last we heard about the Evil Dead remake, Lily Collins, who was set to play the female lead — the “lead” lead — had dropped out due to scheduling issues. That part has yet to be re-cast. But now we know who will be playing that female character’s brother: Shiloh Fernandez. Don’t worry, we don’t know who he is either. Let’s find out together! There is a plot synopsis inside, so if you are avoiding even the most general of spoilers, be forewarned.

Some of you might read that kind of headline and groan. And mutter. And say things like “Jeez, with the musicals already!” But then you’d be tragically close-minded. Hear me out. Diablo Cody has been working on a movie adaptation of Francine Pascal‘s Sweet Valley High books — featuring the perfect, blonde, identical twins, Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield — and has just informed us that it will be a musical. My teenage ’90s heart can barely contain itself. Even if I was more of a Babysitters Club girl. (By the way, Diablo Cody, when are you writing a Babysitters Club fem-slash graphic novel for the sheer heck of it?)

All I can say about this is “WOW.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the team remaking The Evil Dead had a very different kind of lead in mind for the new flick and has already made an offer — to Lily Collins. You heard me: a female lead for the new Evil Dead, which is being co-written by Diablo Cody (along with director Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues). Are we ready for this, fellow primitive screwheads? Come inside, but be aware that there are some minor plot spoilers. We will protect you from them with our chainsaw arms. (Actually they’re not big spoilers, unless you really don’t want to know anything at all about the movie.)

If fans of the Evil Dead movies wonder anything about Evil Dead 2, it’s why, in the name of all that’s holy, does Ash (Bruce Campbell) return to that godforsaken cabin in the woods after everything that happened in the first movie? Was his mind erased? Did he just think, “Aw, heck! That won’t happen twice!” and pack up his car, unsuspecting girlfriend in tow? Well, Ash won’t be in the new Evil Dead movie, and none of those characters will have experienced what Ash did. And according to some new details being leaked, they actually do have a reason to go to this hellhole: drugs.

It feel incredibly weird to be an Evil Dead fan right now. On one hand, we are really conflicted about whether or not we want to see a remake of this movie, which is a classic indie horror chestnut. A classic indie horror chestnut that is so special because of the people who are in it and how it came to be. That kind of experience can never be duplicated, and most of us would prefer to keep it sacred. But then one of those original people — Bruce Campbell, that gentleman above — not only gave the script his blessing, but has agreed to film a cameo in the remake. This, plus the news that the remake will have different characters and a different story, also makes it feel like less of a reboot or remake and more of a new installment of the existing series. (Especially if Sam Raimi really is involved.)
