Woman calls her sister to say she is engaged. Then her boyfriend tells her he did not give her an engagement ring

Miscommunication

In a TikTok video, Louisa Melcher (@loulouorange) said through tears that she felt “embarrassed” after her boyfriend of four years pulled out a ring just before dessert on their date. But she wasn’t embarrassed because he gave her a ring. She was disconcerted by what she later learned had been his intention.

Recalling what she believed was a proposal, Melcher said she began crying as the restaurant guests cheered, turning the moment into what she described as a beautiful experience. However, things changed when she got back to the car.

She said she called her sister to tell her she was engaged, and they both screamed and cried. But after hanging up, Melcher realized she wasn’t actually engaged. Her boyfriend explained that the ring he had given her was a promise ring, often worn by people in long-term relationships as a mark of commitment and loyalty before taking the next step in their lives together.

“I’m 31. I turned 32 this month. We’ve been together four years. Why would I assume it’s a promise ring?” she asked in the video. She also pointed out that the ring her boyfriend gave her had a diamond and that he told her she was meant to wear it on her third finger. According to Melcher, her boyfriend assured her that he would eventually buy her a much nicer ring when the time was “really right.”

Melcher said her boyfriend brought up his brother, noting that he had also given his girlfriend a promise ring. But she challenged the comparison, pointing out that his brother and girlfriend were high school sweethearts and that he gave her the ring at a time when such a gesture was common, making their situation slightly different from Melcher and her boyfriend’s.

A story that possibly needs additional backing

While Melcher’s account of the events surrounding her apparent proposal seems sincere, a closer look at her TikTok profile raises doubts. Notably, in a TikTok video Melcher uploaded to her profile, she captioned it, “Surprised my fiancé by flying 2000 miles to his Yosemite bachelor trip.”

The video was posted almost a month before the promise-ring video, creating an apparent discrepancy between the timelines of the two accounts. That said, the upload dates alone don’t establish when the events shown actually took place. The promise-ring video could have been filmed earlier and uploaded later, but it certainly raises some questions.

Despite the questions surrounding her other videos, some commenters appeared sympathetic to Melcher’s situation. One person urged her to leave the relationship and not waste her time. Another individual asked her to take some time instead. They wrote, “If he doesn’t want to marry you after 4 years, cut ties. Only thing worse than wasting 4 years on him is wasting 4 years and 1 day.”

After four years together, some couples may anticipate an engagement, while others may have different plans or timelines. In Melcher’s case, the situation seems to have revealed a misunderstanding between what she thought the ring symbolized and what her boyfriend intended it to signify.
