Texas man goes to grab drinks at Target with his wife, gets disrespected in the funniest way possible by the cashier: ‘Stop laughing’

Should he take that as a compliment?

A routine stop for drinks at a Texas Target turned into an awkward checkout encounter when a cashier reportedly openly questioned whether a customer and his wife were actually together. Despite the couple standing side by side in line, the employee was allegedly ringing up their items separately and hesitated when asked to combine the purchase.

Content creator Cody Marler (@cody.marler) recounted the moment in a TikTok video with hundreds of thousands of views. While running errands around town with his wife, Leslie, the pair reportedly stopped into the store to grab a couple of canned drinks. Standing right beside her at the register, Marler assumed the transaction would be straightforward. But he couldn’t have been more wrong.

According to Marler, the cashier showed visible disbelief at their pairing in the checkout line before finally letting him pay for their drinks. The incident sparked a blunt reaction from Marler while his wife laughed off-camera in the car.

A routine beverage checkout at Target led to a harsh reality check

Recounting the visit from the driver’s seat of his vehicle, Cody explained that he was standing close to his wife throughout their time waiting in line. “We were checking out, and I don’t give my wife like a ton of space, okay?” he noted in the clip.

“She hands the cashier her drink, and then very soon after, I hand my drink—or try to. She scans Leslie’s, says, you know, ‘The total’s $2.98,’ and I’m like, you know, ‘Take my can too.’”

Rather than scanning his drink right away, the cashier reportedly paused to double-check their connection. “She’s like, ‘Oh, this is together?’ And she like looked at us again and said, ‘Y’all are together?’” Cody recalled. “And I was so completely without words that I just was like, ‘Yeah. Can you please scan the drink now?’”

According to Cody, the employee looked down and shook her head in disbelief before proceeding. “She looked at me like Lord Farquaad who looked at Fiona and Shrek when she found out that that’s who she was into,” he added before turning to his wife sitting nearby. “My God! Stop laughing, Leslie! You think it’s so funny!”

How strangers perceive physical parity in romantic relationships

The interaction highlights how strangers often make judgments about couples based on their attractiveness compared to each other. It’s not uncommon for people to rate relationships as more stable, compatible, and mutually satisfying when partners appear matched in physical attractiveness.

When people believe couples have an asymmetry, they are more likely to question the authenticity of the relationship. Or, they may assume external factors such as financial status or personality traits compensate for the difference.

However, Marler took the Target cashier’s reaction lightheartedly and acknowledged that his wife is a total “smoke show.” At the same time, he also conceded that even though her looks regularly turn heads, having his relationship audited by a stranger over a three-dollar soda stung.
