Valve Reveals Team Fortress 2 Co-Op Mode, Mann vs. Machine

Recommended Videos

Turns out all that speculation about a Mann vs. Machine update for Team Fortress 2 was on the money. Valve has revealed a new co-op horde mode, set to launch August 15th, that has RED and BLU working together to combat GRAY. It may not be a new team, unless you count the robot enemies that you probably can’t play as, but a co-op mode is just the thing to refresh the aging shooter.

The page for the update explains exactly what our old friends the mercenaries will have to accomplish in the new mode:

Mann vs. Machine is a new co-operative game for Team Fortress 2 that lets you and five friends wage a desperate battle to stop a lethal horde of robots from deploying a bomb in one of Mann Co.’s many strongholds. Take advantage of breaks between waves to upgrade your abilities and weapons. Survive all the waves in any of a variety of missions to earn incredible loot.

The robots that will surely cover many a battlefield come tomorrow are basically mechanical versions of the mercenaries. They do include some special versions, however. For instance, the Sentry Buster looks like a mine on legs that’s designed to take out sentry turrets. There will also be giant Soldiers, Heavies, and Scouts mucking about on the battlefield. A final special robot is listed as “???” on the page with a picture of tank treads. Whatever it is, it can’t be good.

Today should see more details about the mercenaries. Most likely, we’ll get a list of the items coming tomorrow, or the way the upgrades between waves will occur, or both. Until then, time to brush up on your potentially rusty Team Fortress 2 skills.
