You may know Chris Daughtry best for his music, or at least for being one of the success stories to come out of FOX's American Idol. But did you know that he's also a visual artist who's dreamed about drawing comics? It's hard to imagine a writer who would be a better fit to write Jughead than Chip Zdarsky, and Jughead #1 (out tomorrow!), proves that. After reading the hilarious, surreal, and surprisingly sentimental first issue, we spoke to Zdarsky over email about collaborating with Squirrel Girl artist Erica Henderson, making sense of Jughead's obsessions, and whether or not Howard and Jughead would get along.Read More

Sometimes, it's OK to not be beholden to all of comics history.
By now, you know that there is a series of variant covers that DC Comics is putting out across all their titles in June to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of their most popular villain, The Joker (like the one above by Javier Pulido for Catwoman #41). He's certainly a complex, frightening villain who's worth celebrating. Yay talented ladies!
Despite the fact that DC Comics and Marvel are slowly, sloooowly geting better when it comes featuring different types of gender, racial, and body diversity in their books, the behind-the-scenes ratio of male to female comic creators leaves something to be desired. So it's cool to see that in March, Marvel will be doing a special variant cover event to highlight their pool of female artists. But is it enough?Read More

LEGO and Marvel have been joining forces recently to make my eleven-year-old self foam at the mouth with rabid glee. First they put out the amazing Super Hero minifigure sets last year (now's where I would brag about my Hawkeye minifigure if I knew where the heck I put it). Then they released the trailer for the Marvel Superhero LEGO PC game. Now they've announced that in September, several comic book titles will put out LEGO variant covers featuring your favorite characters all adorable and LEGO-fied. I'm not a big variant collector, but I might camp out at my local comic book store for these.Read More
Comic books and variant covers go together like sandwiches and bread. Sure, comics could exist without them, but it just wouldn't be the same. DC Comics knows this all too well, apparently. As part of the February launch of their Justice League of America title, the first issue will include 52 distinct variant covers. When they say "America," they totally mean all of it. Each state will get their own variant, as well as Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. Seriously.Read More
