‘Suppression of free speech and unconstitutional’: Piers Morgan sounds the alarm after Trump targets CNN, MS NOW and Politico
Silencing voices is never a good look
In a major attack on First Amendment rights, President Donald Trump announced on Friday that news outlets CNN, MS NOW, and Politico would no longer be allowed access to the White House. He wrote on Truth Social, “I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico… from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!”
He also said other publications would follow suit if they don’t play by the rules. He stated, “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.” He added, “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
Following the announcement, multiple members of the press spoke out against the move. Piers Morgan, who once supported Trump during his first term, weighed in. On social media, condemning Trump’s actions, Morgan wrote, “This is a very bad decision, President @realDonaldTrump – it’s not the media’s job to give you endless praise. It’s their job to hold you and your administration to rigorous account. Banning them is a suppression of free speech and unconstitutional.”
Trump did not give empty threats
Trump’s threats to curb freedom appear not to have been empty. Earlier, he did so through lawsuits; now he is actively silencing them.
On Saturday, CNN alleged that the Secret Service denied its Senior White House Reporter, Betsy Klein, access to the White House and “seized her press pass.”
In addition to CNN, MS Now and Politico also reported similar actions. In an article on Saturday, MS Now wrote, “A reporter and a cameraman from MS NOW were not allowed into the White House early in the morning, and their press badges were confiscated by U.S. Secret Service at a security gate outside the West Wing.”
Politico, in an article published on Saturday as well, said its White House reporter, Cheyenne Haslett, was denied entry to the complex by the Secret Service and that her pass allowing her access to the White House was “confiscated.”
Notably, CNN’s Chief White House correspondent, Kaitlan Collins, who has faced Trump’s contempt on multiple occasions, also spoke on the matter. She wrote on X, “‘It’s all been a victory,’ Trump says of his presidency while lamenting a lack of positive coverage when asked why he says he’s banning several outlets, including CNN, from the White House.”
People in her comment section debated the issue. Some believed Trump’s actions were justified, while others accused Collins of maligning him and argued that his actions were long overdue and justified. What do you think of the issue?
