Spider-Man: Brand New Day Just Broke a 5-Year Box Office Record — And It Hasn’t Even Opened Yet

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is breaking records, and the movie isn’t here for another month! What a time to be a fan of the Marvel hero.
Sony Pictures released the long-awaited second trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day this week. Tickets also went on sale in short order. And, the results from those ticket pre-sales will have your jaw on the floor. It turns out, as we basically knew, Spider-Man is teflon in pop culture. Sony had the highest first-day pre-sale ticket numbers in five years for this film according to Deadline. That’s a wild number to think about when you consider the absolute sensations that have hit the big screen since 2021.
Hysterically, the closest comp that Deadline found in their investigation of the numbers was Spider-Man: No Way Home. Back in 2021, the previous Tom Holland Spidey feature brought in about $78 million in presale before hitting theaters in December. That would mean we’re staring down the barrel of an immense opening weekend for this film. And, that’s even with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey coming in just two weeks before that! The cinema is absolutely on fire right now.
Theater exhibitors could be in for a truly transformative summer at the movies. It feels like the next eight weeks each have a project that could bring in a massive opening weekend. If there was every year where things might throw it back to how it was in pre-2020, this would be the year. And honestly, these strong presale numbers show that theatrical is anything but dying. Young people, diverse crowds, and of course superhero fans are going to make sure that this middle frame of 2026 is one to remember.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Posts Amazing Pre-Sale Numbers

So, after looking at these facts, the question becomes why is Spider-Man: Brand New Day the recipient of these massive presale numbers? Other deserving movies have been released in the ensuing five years since Spider-man: No Way Home. But, none of them have managed to incite this level of fan fervor around their release. The answer is an interesting one.
For good and bad, Marvel Studios productions still inspire a level of fan devotion that a lot of smaller projects would do terrible things to ensure. Online, conversations around the Walt Disney Corporation, Marvel, and franchises more broadly have shifted into a negative tone. But that’s the product of social media algorithms trying to juice numbers by stocking the flames of debate. On the ground, a lot of these movies are still doing amazing. (Pun intended!)
How Have Theater Ticket Sales Changed Since 2021?
Is it the same sort of ludicrous numbers that we were seeing out of the cinema in 2019? No, Viewership and theater going habits have shifted drastically in the ensuing years. Also of note, we’re in the midst of a period of economic anxiety for a lot of consumers. And, other cost of living expenses brought on by tariffs, Rising costs, and a variety of options have played a role. All of those factors cut into that massive pie that movie studios were enjoying before the clock struck midnight on January 1 2020.
However, a short anomaly in 2019 aside, this is a healthy trend for the theater industry. Online, punditry has tried its best to milk a fake controversy about the box office being in trouble for the past three years running. A lot of that is due to needing to make ends meet over at different publishers. But, on the ground, especially the last couple of years people are just enjoying the movies they go to see. Especially if they’re horror!
What Is Spider-Man up to now?
Another underrated portion of this discussion is the unique positioning for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is truly out on his own for the first time as a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tony Stark is dead, no one knows who he is, and he’s trying hardest to still protect New York City. The headlining star has been open about mining social media for inspiration for this story. So, the fan excitement also comes from people asking for something and getting it.
Here’s how Sony is teasing our boy’s re-entry to the MCU. “It’s a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him–and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him–sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.”
“But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves – a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters July 31.
