MMO RIFT announced that they were attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the most in-game marriages in a 24 hour period. Those wondering where one could go to find a virtual spouse will be happy to know RIFT did indeed set that record. Between 9 am PST on February 14 to 9am PST on February 15, 21,879 virtual marriages were confirmed.

The event was officially recorded for the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition. Not only did players take part in setting a Guinness World Record and find a virtual spouse in their MMO, but they were treated to a new player title, “The Avowed,” making being a spouse sound like some kind of vengeful demon spirit that drops sweet loot.

The event took place for a recent expansion in the game, and setting a Guinness World Record isn’t a shabby way to introduce your expansion to the world — much better than a press release spammed to everyone’s inbox and a generic trailer on YouTube showing some guy with a cape standing on a mountaintop juxtaposed with a large moon in the background. If RIFT will now set the record for largest amount of virtual divorces because players just got married for the title-receiving benefits, we’ll just have to wait and see.
