Are We Getting Plot Hints for Star Trek 2 From the Comics?

Back in June, we reported on a new Star Trek comic from IDW that was going to bridge the first movie of J.J. Abrams‘ reboot with its upcoming sequel. Overseen by Roberto Orci, the screenwriter of the first movie, the comic just released its fourth issue, and according to Orci, you might be able to start seeing the first hints of the sequel’s plot. And one source assures us that this quest for clues is “not like The Da Vinci Code.” So, that’s good!

Issue #4 is currently covering the episode from the original series, The Galileo Seven, in which the Enterprise crew visits the planet Taurus II, the inhabitants of which are an ape-like race of humanoids. And the comic’s writer, Mike Johnson, says that it’s time to commence the search for hints about the plot of Star Trek 2:

“One of the great things about working with Bob [Orci] is that we are able to use the ongoing series to very subtly lay in clues to the next movie. There might even be a tiny hint of a subplot in the first issue. …

The writer also noted that the clues will “not be like the Da Vinci Code”, but he also said that “when you see the movie you will be able to look back to the comics and say, ‘oh I see what they did there.’”

That first issue came out back in September, but so far, there has been no mention of the very, very possible villain Khan. Star Trek 2 is scheduled to hit theaters May 2013. For now, you can see a few of Issue #4’s panels here, and even more at TrekMovie.com.
