Yes. Firefly writer and producer Tim Minear posited the idea of a Firefly “Limited Series” on Netflix in an interview. No. That does not mean it’s happening.
Minear was speaking to Entertainment Weekly when they asked him about the prospect of bringing Firefly. He told them:
I’m completely talking off the top of my head, but there’s a show that’s been on for the last couple years that’s reinvented the form in terms of the limited series. I’m trying to think of the name of that show — Oh yes! American HorrorStory! It doesn’t have to be 13 episodes. Look how Sherlock does it.
And…
I think a limited series of some kind would work best. Something like that could also work if, say, 20th could partner with Netflix, or another distributor. It would have its home on Fox, of course [then a second window on streaming]. A limited series would do very well, I bet.
That doesn’t mean it’s happening. Nathan Fillion has an exclusive deal with ABC to keep being Castle, and that show’s doing well right now. Joss Whedon is running Marvel’s universe, and he’s already said he’d rather create new worlds than go back to old ones. A representative from Netflix also said they wouldn’t be producing any more Firefly. Even Minear admits that the fact that Firefly fans got a movie after the show was canceled was “a miracle.”
The key players are all incredibly busy and have moved on, not to mention the fact that it’s not up to Tim Minear whether or not this happens. He was also clear in the interview that there’s no plan for this to happen; he’s just speaking hypothetically. If they were to try to do more Firefly, he thinks a limited series would be the way to go. That’s it. Just Minear’s opinion on how it would happen.
We’re not getting more Firefly.
