Will ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ Be the Last ‘Jurassic World’ Movie?
The end of an era, or the beginning of one?
It has been about seven years since the Jurassic Park sequel, Jurassic World, premiered in theaters. The film served as a direct sequel to the Jurassic Park series, however, with a new set of characters. Jurassic World takes place 22-years after the events of Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar. The island has been transformed into a theme park, called Jurassic World, which features cloned dinosaurs. However, when the dinosaurs escape, they plunge the whole island into chaos and danger.
Jurassic World‘s release in 2015 marked the launch of the Jurassic World series. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howards headed the franchise, with their roles as Owen Grady and Grace Dearing, respectively. The two starred in Jurassic World and its sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. They will soon be reprising their roles for the third film in the series, Jurassic World: Dominion.
Jurassic World: Dominion will release on June 10th, 2022. Jurassic World: Dominion will see the return of director Colin Trevorrow, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Emily Carmichael. The film occurs four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar and sees both humans and dinosaurs living among each other. Hence, it will dig into whether humans and dinosaurs truly can co-exist, and how this will impact the future.
Is Jurassic World: Dominion the last film?
Jurassic World: Dominion‘s theatrical release is quickly approaching. However, while fans are excited for a new Jurassic World film, they are also curious if this marks the last film in the series. Technically, yes, Jurassic World: Dominion is the last film in the Jurassic World series. After all, Jurassic World has always been referred to as a trilogy, meaning Dominion marks the 3rd and final film, and will serve as a wrap-up for the Jurassic World trilogy, as well as for the Jurassic Park trilogy before it. However, this doesn’t mean that there won’t be another Jurassic film in some capacity.
There have already been hints at the Jurassic Park franchise’s continuation. For example, Netflix has released the highly popular kid-friendly animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. This series is canon to the Jurassic Park franchise and follows a group of teens who attend a summer camp on the Isla Nublar. Meanwhile, the producer of Jurassic World: Dominion, Frank Marshall, has also stated that they are looking to do much more with the Jurassic franchise besides Camp Cretaceous. Hence, viewers should look at Jurassic World: Dominion as the last film in the Jurassic World series, but also as the potential start of a new era in the Jurassic franchise.
