Only yesterday it was announced that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard had actual named roles in the next Batman movie, and to the shock of many, they were going to play original characters instead of the high profile villains that many people had assumed. Gordon-Levitt, in particular, would be playing a “beat cop” named John Blake.

But subsequently, Bleeding Cool discovered that John Blake is actually a canonical character dating back to 1942 in the story “Comedy of Tears.” See after the jump for his appearance:

There you have it folks. The first (and last) appearance of Johnny Blake. It probably tells us just as much about his TDKR character as Tom Hardy’s Beard did about Bane.
