‘Glee’ is officially back as reboot given the greenlight by Hulu and Disney+

And that's what you missed on 'Glee'!

It’s official — Glee is back.  Hulu and Disney+ have given the reboot of Ryan Murphy’s infamous show the go-ahead, though little is known about what it might entail. So far, the main news is that 20th Television will produce it, and it will air on Disney+ and Hulu.

Ryan Murphy has reportedly also written a reboot script with collaborators Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk. The reboot’s streaming debut is unknown; however, fans can likely expect a long wait.

The original ‘Glee’ became a cultural phenomenon

The original musical dramedy premiered in 2009 on Fox and starred Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Naya Rivera, Lea Michelle, Dianna Agron, Cory Monteith, Jenna Ushkowitz, Heather Morris, Harry Shum Jr., Kevin McHale, Darren Criss, Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Mark Salling, and many more. The series followed a high school glee club in Lima, Ohio, for six seasons as they dealt with the horrors of high school and beyond. By the time the show ended in 2015, it had become a huge hit, sparking a Glee tour and a reality series that pitted contestants against one another to win a spot on Glee.

Despite its wild popularity, it was also controversial at times for how it tackled serious subjects like mental health, sexuality, and more. However, the actors’ covers of hit songs like “Poker Face” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” rose above the controversy and remain popular today, with the show’s soundtrack still averaging over 4 million listeners a month on Spotify.

Getting the band back together might not work out

As Deadline reported, so far there’s no casting news for the series, though Ryan Murphy reportedly said he had reached out to about 10 members of the original cast, so it’s safe to say at least a few familiar faces might appear. He also said everyone he spoke with was enthusiastic about the idea of a reboot.

Just weeks before Murphy made those remarks, Lea Michele told E! News, “I love Glee. I will always love Glee. I love Ryan Murphy. It just holds such a special place in my heart for me… I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”

When Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, one of the best LGBTQ+ characters on TV of all time, spoke to Bustle about a possible reboot, he pointed out complications with the idea of the cast returning, but said he would consider it: “It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya [Rivera] is gone. But I do know that Glee fans would probably come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands if I said no. So I don’t know, but hopefully I’ll have more information and I can actually think about it.”

It’s unknown who else might be on board for the reboot and who might be on the fence. Unfortunately, Naya Rivera wouldn’t be the only original cast member not to appear, even if everyone else was on board. Cory Monteith passed away in 2013, during the show’s original run, and Mark Salling died by suicide in 2018.
